D'oh! Forgot to add a local bump installs and is working fine for me on two systems.
=dev-lang/R-3.5.0 released with significant changes under the hood that improve performance. Bumped locally yesterday and seems ok here (so far!). Announcement at https://stat.ethz.ch/pipermail/r-announce/2018/000628.html Be good to see this bumped in portage if possible.
What is the status of this bug? The R ebuild in portage has not been updated in a long while, same for rstudio. Is there an issue that I am not aware of that is preventing this from being updated?
Good question. Until such time as Portage is updated I can recommend bumping locally for =dev-lang/R-3.5.0, see https://wiki.gentoo.org/wiki/Custom_repository RStudio ebuilds are in my experience more fickle when bumping locally. The most recent bug report is #652116 which requests bumping to =sci-mathematics/rstudio-1.1.442 (although the current release is 1.1.453 https://www.rstudio.com/products/rstudio/download/#download). I don't use RStudio myself though (Emacs + ESS instead) so don't keep up to date nor bump RStudio locally, but if you can update locally then report back to the above bug and hopefully Portage will see an update from the asignee (and someone on sci-mathematics@gentoo.org who this has been assigned to will address this bug too).

I'll keep it synced with upstream until newer versions are in portage. I'll look into rstudio but as Neil pointed out, it has many more dependencies.
