In the new 1.4 iso there is a problem getting the cdrom/dvd device. After booting from the iso image, the /dev/cdroms/ directory is empty and there isn't any device hde (in the stable 1.2 iso the dvd is identyfied by the hde device and work properly). In the boot message I can't find any message about the dvd of my PowerBook G3 Pismo.

Hmmm, do you have a kernel .config that you use for that machine around? i would like to see if if you could upload it to make necessary changes to the kernel config for ISO.
I haven't yet a kernel .config to upload, because I'm trying to install the 1.2 release. However, with the 1.2 boot cd the LG DVD is reported without problem; dmes show "hde: LG DVD etc.." I'm installing the 1.2-r1 release, probably today I can post a working .config file for my PoweBook.
I have an idea why this may not be working, try adding this append when you boot with yaboot: devfs=mount This may be the problem, as by default I am not sure that there is a /dev/hde without devfs and it's the only thing I can think of that would be different from old kernel to new one.
Created attachment 3032 [details] 1.2 dmesg This is the dmesg output from gentoo 1.2 boot cd. Only in this release, the cdrom/dvd is present.
Created attachment 3033 [details] 1.2 r1 dmesg This is the dmesg output from gentoo 1.2 r1 boot cd. With this version and with the 1.4 pre-release the cdrom's device is not present.
Hi Mark, I created two attachment with the output of dmesg from boot cd. In the working release (1.2 kernel r3) is present the cdrom's device linked to a scsi channel (I don't understand if there's an emulation of ide or an emulation of scsi; excuse me for my poor knowledge and english). In the "buggy" releases (1.2 r1 & 1.4 >> kernel r6) there's a problem with a scsi module during startup; maybe this is the problem (without scsi the cdrom isn't emulated)?!? Ps: because I'm not able yet, to build a booting kernel, I'm not able to append the option in yaboot. What are the full comand to pass at the yaboot prompt with the gentoo boot cd?
for the options just do this at yaboot prompt: boot devfs=mount (any append option in yaboot can also be typed on tha yaboot command line) :)
Created attachment 3049 [details] working kernel config Probably the bug is solved ;-) In the working config attached, the only difference show comparing the "original" config is with the "Power management for Powerbook" option; like reported by the help, this options enable also the Media bay, and so the cdroms/dvd. Bye, GianBeOS.
# CONFIG_PMAC_PBOOK is not set Yep you are correct, that comes from our ISO kernel config. I will get this looked after immediately :)
looked at. Fixed. Thank you for the bug report, would have never even noticed. All my gentoo ppc boxes are core99 machines, which don't have media bays. lol. kevyn
Tested new 1.4 ISO kernel for PPC on a Powerbook G3 '99, media bay device detected and assigned. Will post new kernel for workaround until final 1.4 ISO ships. Closing bug.
