Description pogosyan 2017-06-13 17:54:05 UTC
skypeforlinux description says

Description: P2P Internet Telephony (VoiceIP) client

This is incorrect, since new version of skype does not use peer-to-peer protocol anymore, rather it uses centralized Microsoft Azure service

I suggest taking the description from the official website (https://www.skype.com/en/about/)

DESCRIPTION="Skype is for doing things together, whenever you’re apart"

Main page title (https://www.skype.com/en/) is "Free calls to friends and family". There is also another great slogan - "Skype keeps the world talking, for free". We have a few great options, which one we choose? :)

...or we keep it technical, and instead of trying to brainwash people tell them what it is. Like:

Description: Shitty webview wrapper over Skype online VoIP service

If it's too long, we can remove 'shitty' ;-P.
Comment 4 Karol Grudziński 2017-07-20 12:07:39 UTC
We can borrow description from Arch: "Skype for Linux WebRTC Beta" w/o "Beta" part. My proposition is "WebRTC messaging and audio/video calling client" (simillar to net-libs/tox's description).

Is it really necessary to mention some kind of underlying technology? WebRTC is not needed here at all.

Description from Google SERP is much more informative, though changing low cost to paid is a good idea:

"Skype-to-Skype calls, IM and video calls, plus low-cost calls and texts to mobiles and landlines."

SO here's the final result:

"Skype-to-Skype calls, IM and video calls, plus paid calls and texts to mobiles and landlines."

Mgorny, your sense of humor is valuable. HOwever in this case since it's a user visible change especially I'd advise against leaving snarky comments in our ebuilds.

I too think that "RTC" may be misleading.

My personal opinion is to use whatever upstream says (in this case, microsoft).

However, I agree with the comments raised about "brainwashing" and I too would like to avoid marketing propaganda. I would like the description to be kept technical in nature. This is an ebuild file, not an advertisement from microsoft.
