Rebuilding it (and html5lib) doesn't seem to make a difference. I tried bumping it to 0.9.8, but the patch does not apply. I tried massaging it to make it work with 0.9.8, but failed to get a compiling version.

It seems there has been no advancement on this. Is the ebuild still maintained? 0.9.6 is from June 2016, and since then two newer versions were released: 0.9.7 about a year ago, and 0.9.8 on March. An ebuild for the newer version would be great...
just FYI, i modified the patch file for the 0.9.8 sources, and the existing ebuild worked. a crude brute-force method, but i got sigil-0.9.8 to compile, i used it a little bit and seems to be working fine.
