just because gshield tries to symlink /etc/firewall/ to gshield which fails b/c the later installed /etc/firewall/applet.conf.

That didn't fix the ebuild that triggered this bug report in the first place.

A better solution is to get rid of 16 year old gshield. There are many scripting solutions to building iptables firewalls that are better than this and which as a bonus get updated regularly, perhaps net-firewall/shorewall or another net-firewall/*wall.
