Sorry my bad English. sys-apps/memtest86: does not work with LILO. After the upgrade to memtest86-4.3.7 still does not work.
I can still reproduce this with current versions: sys-boot/lilo-24.2, sys-apps/memtest86-4.3.7-r2, in a VM. However, memtest86-4.x is quite old. I would not be surprised if it has issues on modern CPUs. Newer memtest86, 9.x, is binary-only (packaged as memtest86-bin), and only supports UEFI, no BIOS support any more - meaning no lilo AFAIK. sys-apps/memtest86+ worked fine for me on the first try. If this still matters to you, I suggest trying memtest86+.
(In reply to globus from comment #1) > After the upgrade to memtest86-4.3.7 still does not work. Have you tried with GRUB or another bootloader on this same hardware? Wondering if it's actually a LILO issue or just memtest doesn't work on this hardware.

My understanding is it has always been a memtest86 issue, not a LILO one. I gave up on classic memtest86, especially after it went closed-source and swithed to memtest86+, which does work fine with LILO. Likely this can be closed as WONTFIX because memtest86-4.x is no longer worked on, and as another comment states, the current 9.x versions do not support traditional BIOS boot. Might even be worth putting a block in memtest86-bin's ebuild against sys-boot/lilo to avoid this happening in the future.
I wonder if we will eventually need to drop sys-apps/memtest support... other distros are still continuing to patch & maintain memtest86+ but not the original. FYI I have now added checks on memtest+ and memtest86-bin, to warn on possible BIOS/EFI compatibility mismatch. I can do old memtest later.
