the stdout/err of emerge

4 packages should be emerged (3x U, 1xD) - the 3rd failed but portage continued.

BTW that uncovered a flaw in my tinderbox script. IIRC such an issue happened 2 or 3 times in the past before I realized the culprit.

The package log file is in bug #586356
Comment 3 Zac Medico gentoo-dev 2016-06-19 18:58:47 UTC
The log shows that it failed in pkg_postinst, and pkg_postinst failures are much more noticeable since the changes from bug 547778.

I suppose it would be possible to have a rollback feature for cases like this, if a binary package is a available for the previous version (could be guaranteed via FEATURES=unmerge-backup). This has some overlap with bug 40127.
Comment 4 Toralf Förster gentoo-dev 2016-06-19 19:20:52 UTC
I do have set "-j1" in make.conf and neither "--jobs " nor --keep-going set.
Therefore I assumed that "emerge ... @world" would stop for every error.

Generally, it doesn't make a lot of sense to stop for pkg_postinst failures, since they typically not very severe. We could add an option to stop, of course. Note that emerge already returns an unsuccessful returncode in this case, since bug 547778.
Comment 6 Toralf Förster gentoo-dev 2016-06-19 20:38:33 UTC
(In reply to Zac Medico from comment #5)
An option to stop in such a case would be helpful IMO, sometimes such an error might have a severe culprit.
Comment 7 Zac Medico gentoo-dev 2016-06-19 20:43:54 UTC
Maybe we can use the --keep-going option to control this behavior.
Comment 8 Brian Dolbec (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2016-06-19 20:52:27 UTC
re-using --keep-going sounds reasonable to me. Is better than yet another option which is almost the same as --keep-going.
Comment 9 Brian Dolbec (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2016-06-19 20:53:30 UTC
That came out wrong...I didn't mean there are others that are almost the same as --keep-going already ;)
