samba ebuild (at least 3.0.5 checked)
does not use gentoo's emake, leading to not being build in parallel:
...
make everything
...

replacing make with emake enables one to build samba MUCH faster
on multi CPU machines (-j)

you're right. Fixed.
BTW: If you have an arch beside sparc or x86, could you test the ebuild proposed in bug #58090?
