Can you try to emerge rsync and remerge this?
Comment 2 Avi Schwartz 2002-07-06 08:12:30 UTC
The same result.
Comment 3 Paul Richardson 2002-07-06 10:51:05 UTC
I was able to work around this by first removing all the sgml and docbook
packages with:

  qpkg -I -nc -g app-text | grep -E '(docb|sgml)' | xargs emerge -C

I should add that I don't do anything with docbook or sgml so if I wrecked it
all I really wouldn't lose anything. I just keep it around hoping to learn one
day. You might need to be more careful.

Then I re-installed the whole pile with

  qpkg -U -nc -g app-text | grep -E '(docb|sgml[^2])' | xargs emerge -p

Check first with -p to see what will go in, then run without the -p:

  qpkg -U -nc -g app-text | grep -E '(docb|sgml[^2])' | xargs emerge

I'm using portage 2.0.9 where -U is advertised as considering 'only uninstalled
packages' but behaves as if it considers all packages, only printing the list
without the '*' that marks installed packages; the point here being that this
procedure may stop working for future versions of portage.

Also, the '[^2]' is there because emerge barfs on package 'app-text/sgml2x' for
some reason.
Comment 4 Paul Richardson 2002-07-06 11:27:54 UTC
OK, so if you did all that in the previous comment you might find that
libeee won't merge for you because of a docbook error.

So
  emerge docbook-sgml-utils
one more time, per bug #4512.
Comment 5 Seemant Kulleen (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2002-07-06 20:43:02 UTC

Afraid not. At this point I have tried to remove all the docbook and sgml
packages and re-emrge them with the same exact result when it tries to build
app-text/docbook-sgml-utils.

Comment 18 Martin Schlemmer (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2002-07-08 18:19:17 UTC
# emerge app-text/sgml-common

Then remerge app-text/docbook-sgml-utils

This whole thing was caused by the broken pkg_postrm() function of
sgml-common-0.6.3, and was activated by the update (sgml-common-0.6.3-r1)
which fixes this. Basically the catalogs was removed in the wrong order,
and when the package was still installed.

If you remerge sgml-common-0.6.3-r1, it will add the right catalogs back in
and wont try to remove them while the package (just newer revision) is still
installed. Future updates should now also go without problem (after you have
merged sgml-common-0.6.3-r1 twice).

Comment 19 Marcelo Fontenele S Santos 2002-07-08 20:30:45 UTC
Worked for me.

Thanks!
Comment 20 Chris Russell 2002-07-09 06:28:18 UTC
me too.
I had remerged sgml-common, the second try must have done the trick.

[removing cc.]
Comment 21 Patrick Naubert 2002-07-09 07:23:50 UTC
Hasn't worked for me.

I unmerged everything that had to do with "sgml" and remerged.
Same problem appears.

Any suggestions ?
Comment 22 Avi Schwartz 2002-07-09 09:28:08 UTC
Didn't work for me. I even unmerged app-text/sgml-common and then re-emerged
it, but when I try to emerge app-text/docbook-sgml-utils I still get the same
slew of error messages.
Comment 23 Jon Nelson (RETIRED) 2002-07-09 13:33:37 UTC
Unmerging, removing sgml-common* from /usr/portage/packages/All/, and re-merging
app-text/sgml-common did the trick for me.
Comment 24 Jon Nelson (RETIRED) 2002-07-09 13:34:21 UTC
Suggest new revision of sgml-common to "force" update of that package.
it's mighty small, so shouldn't exactly be a burdon.
Make the docbook-sgml-utils depend on it, perhaps.
Comment 25 Martin Schlemmer (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2002-07-09 13:52:23 UTC
I was thinking about that as well, but you will have to ensure somehow that
whatever revision from -r1 and up (or -r1, -r2) gets merged twice in total.
It may be that someone out there havent updated to -r1, and if he then someday
update to -r2 (or whatever), things will still break for him if he dont
remerge it agian.

Maybe there is a way to do some clever "fake" DEPENDS that will force both
-r1 and -r2 to be merged if you were still on 0.6.3 ? Ill think about this
some more.
Comment 26 Avi Schwartz 2002-07-09 14:53:46 UTC
I don't even have /usr/portage/packages/All/. My /usr/portage/packages directory
is empty.
Comment 27 Nils Ohlmeier 2002-07-09 22:12:29 UTC
An remerge of sgml-common also didn't worked for me.

But i unmerged the following packages:
app-text/docbook-dsssl-stylesheets
app-text/docbook-sgml
app-text/docbook-sgml-dtd
app-text/docbook-sgml-utils
app-text/docbook-xml-dtd
app-text/docbook-xml-simple-dtd
app-text/docbook-xsl-stylesheets
app-text/jadetex
app-text/openjade
app-text/sgml-common

And after that i moved away /etc/sgml (to have a backup ;)

Now an 'emerge app-text/docbook-sgml-utils' installed all packages above again
(docbook-sgml not but who cares) and the installitation of
docbook-sgml-util-0.6.11 went fine.
It was the second box where i had trouble with the sgml-utils-0.6.11, and the
second box where the method above fixed it.
I think for me the problem was that the files in /etc/sgml were corrupted
because i unmerged the dtd-[34].0 a few times before.

Ohh, 'qpkg -I -v docbook-sgml-dtd' before "my fix" looked like for Avi, Alex..

Comment 37 Paul Belt 2002-07-20 11:51:23 UTC
I'm thinking it's a missing dependancy issue in comment #35 by Bruce A. Locke
(blocke@gentoo.org)

The reason I say this is because: Comment #33, you'll see jade has an issue
"cannot generate system identifier for public text..." Which, in comment #34,
you see the missing dependancy was: docbook-dsssl-stylesheets

In Comment #35, you also see jade having an issue with "cannot generate system
identifier for public text..."

Same error message from jade... there is a good chance it is the same type of
error that is causing it. As such, below is a list of dependancies (drilling
down into said dependancies to get their dependancies... stopping with unzip) I
could find (assuming USE="-tetex" to remove yet more dependancies) for
docbook-sgml-utils-0.6.11

::> DEPENDANCIES
Any version of these...
   app-text/openjade
   dev-perl/SGMLSpm
   app-text/docbook-xml-simple-dtd
   app-text/docbook-xml-dtd
   app-text/sgml-common

These specific versions...
   =app-text/docbook-sgml-dtd-3.0
   =app-text/docbook-sgml-dtd-3.1
   =app-text/docbook-sgml-dtd-4.0
   =app-text/docbook-sgml-dtd-4.1

Versions equal to or greater than...
   >=app-arch/unzip-5.41
   >=dev-libs/libxml2-2.4
   >=app-text/docbook-xsl-stylesheets-1.45
Comment 38 Christian Kirbach 2002-07-21 09:58:14 UTC
report #31 confirmed for me on 1.3b
there seems to be a path problem - look at the 2 slashes '//' in
the /bin/install
incovation. there is a /var/tmp... path before the /usr/doc... path.
==>
emerging *0.6.9* works for me and satisfies the Gnome2 dependancies.
Comment 39 Martin Schlemmer (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2002-07-21 11:22:06 UTC
Most problems up to date with /bin/install was the cause of merging
sys-apps/fileutils with the "acl" USE flag .... you did that ?
Comment 40 Paul Belt 2002-07-21 11:25:43 UTC
Paul Richardson (prichardson@hvc.rr.com) pointed out to me in an eMail that
"app-text/docbook2X was one source of grief because overwrote files in /usr/bin"

and

"Seems that the gentoo portage system has a plan for handling conflicts in
/usr/lib but not /usr/bin, and that is probably where some of our problems arise."
Comment 41 Sven Wermke 2002-07-22 09:50:17 UTC
Still getting an error like in comment #31 on a fresh Gentoo 1.3a and 1.3b
installation.
I have all the suggested packages it depends on emerged.
Version 0.6.9 emerges in a few minutes on my K6-II 400 while 0.6.11 sits there
for 2-3 hours before it errors out.
I'm using only the default flags.
Comment 42 Christian Kirbach 2002-07-22 16:53:05 UTC
I haven't altered the acl flag, it is still the default acl flag (set or unset) in gentoo
1.3b.

btw: comment #41 fully acknowledged.

I'd just like to add, for the record, that comment #27 worked for me too (thanks

that finally worked. (seems like half the pkgs I try to update want the latest
version of docbook-sgml-utils)

The new libieee1284 (0.2.0) is checked in and masked in portage. I have
changed the dependency information for it, to just depend on docbook-sgml-utils,
rather than a specific version of it. So, please emerge 0.6.9, and then pin
that in your world file, so that it does not want to upgrade. This report will
stay open until we can completely sort out this issue.

Please test and let me know..
Comment 47 Matthew Turk (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2002-08-23 00:14:03 UTC
Ok. This is a result of the various SGML utilities not properly cleaning out
/etc/sgml and /usr/share/sgml. I'm working on a solution...
Comment 48 Matthew Turk (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2002-09-05 20:06:09 UTC

up, I will close this bug in two days.
Comment 52 Jos Dehaes 2002-09-06 16:16:55 UTC
I had problems too, but fixed it with a symlink of /etc/sgml/openjade-1.3.1.cat
to 1.3.cat (which seems to be what docbook-sgml-utils is looking for here)
Comment 53 Magnus Therning 2002-09-07 04:40:02 UTC
If thee is a workaround in the form of re-emerging some packages, unmerging
some, and emerging some others I would like to have the recipe in one little note.

These are the packages that I would merge, in order.

Comment 56 Matthew Turk (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2002-09-12 01:50:46 UTC
Ok, I need a few more pieces of information:

emerge -s openjade
ls -l /etc/sgml
cat /etc/sgml/catalog

I *THINK* that your problem will be solvable with:

install-catalog --remove /etc/sgml/openjade-1.3.cat
/usr/share/sgml/openjade-1.3/catalog

install-catalog --remove /etc/sgml/sgml-docbook.cat /etc/sgml/openjade-1.3.cat

but I'm not sure. I am fairly certain that openjade had a faulty ebuild at
some point in the past, and that upgrading with it left cruft.

After that I emerged docbook-sgml-utils-0.6.11-r2 again but I got the same
errors as before.

What is your current version of docbook-dsssl-stylesheets ? Try re-emerging
it; it supplies the "James Clark" DTD. If that does work, there are some
drastic steps we can take...

This is what I have..

This should clean up all the cruft right? I also removed /etc/sgml

I ran this to re-emerge those packages.

The emerge got as far as docbook-sgml-utils-0.6.11-r2 and gave the error.
Comment 60 Matthew Turk (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2002-09-13 21:58:22 UTC
Try it again, but also rm -rf /usr/share/sgml
Comment 61 VM Nguyen 2002-09-14 07:58:38 UTC
Tried that too.. no go chief.
Comment 62 VM Nguyen 2002-09-16 09:10:06 UTC
I cleaned out my system on the weekends because I wanted to test some
optimisation flags. What's left on my system is essentially the core system
packages (what you would get if you installed gentoo to the end of stage3 for
the first time). I then did an emerge gnome2 and kde and left it to run
overnight. Everything emerged correctly, including docbook-sgml-utils.

So there was some cruft left behind that was giving me problems.. but now
it's no more. Sorry I couldn't give you more information than this.
Comment 63 Matthew Turk (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2002-09-19 02:54:21 UTC
Ok, then I'm going to go ahead and close this massacre of a bug... ;-)
Comment 64 Daniel Holmen 2002-10-04 01:36:35 UTC
Sorry, but this thing still doesn't work on a fresh install of Gentoo (on an
AMD k6-2 500). I've tried every 'fix' in here, but still no go.
Comment 65 Matthew Turk (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2002-10-04 01:45:50 UTC
You are dealing with a different issue. K6-2 has been dealt with in 8104.
Please see there. I am closing this bug.
