Does LTO work at all on HPPA? I imagine this might be a toolchain related problem.
According to the configure output, it seems to think -flto works. :) I can't imagine why it would enable that, though. I'll try with CFLAGS+=" -fno-lto". Also, the last sys-devel/gcc to support IUSE=lto is 4.5.4 - newer versions apparently have it hard-wired to be enabled.
(In reply to comment #2) > According to the configure output, it seems to think -flto works. :) > I can't imagine why it would enable that, though. > > I'll try with CFLAGS+=" -fno-lto". It compiles fine with that forced change. Now what to do? It looks here: checking which warning flags were supported... -Wall -Wextra -Wold-style-definition -Wdeclaration-after-statement -Wmissing-declarations -Werror-implicit-function-declaration -Wnested-externs -Wpointer-arith -Wwrite-strings -Wsign-compare -Wstrict-prototypes -Wmissing-prototypes -Wpacked -Wswitch-enum -Wmissing-format-attribute -Wbad-function-cast -Wvolatile-register-var -Wstrict-aliasing=2 -Winit-self -Wunsafe-loop-optimizations -Wno-missing-field-initializers -Wno-unused-parameter -Wno-attributes -Wno-long-long -Winline -Wlogical-op -fno-strict-aliasing -fno-common -flto -Wp,-D_FORTIFY_SOURCE=2 like someone thinks it's a compiler warning feature...
If LTO is broken only on HPPA, append-cflags -fno-lto would be an option. Have you tried gcc-4.7 too? Or we could patch out the automagic -flto addition from configure but I don't understand where this is generated from configure.ac.
(In reply to comment #4) > Or we could patch out the automagic -flto addition from configure but I > don't understand where this is generated from configure.ac. It's in build/configure.ac.warnings. Appending -flto seems like a bad general rule. We should patch it out.
Any news on this one? I can't proceed to stabilise for bug #458984 without this being sorted out, I guess.
I would suggest -fno-lto as per comment 4, question is only for gcc-4.6 or for gcc-4.7+ too?
I was going with comment #5 here: it's generally a bad idea so we should disable it generally.

Please attach the entire build log and post your `emerge --info' output in a comment.
Also, /join #gentoo-hppa like I asked you plenty of times already.

OK, the difference between both PARISC builds is FEATURES=distcc in my case and FEATURES=-distcc in ago's.
This should be fixed in >=cairo-1.12.2 (it adds a better configure check for -flto). Please check.
Should be fixed for a while now.
