on several days recently, on different articles, Konqueror 3.2.0 has crashed giving the standard KDE crash window, when reading the newspaper 'Globe & Mail'. one article gave a 404 when sought with another browser, others have been available eg using Lynx or Firefox. the latest case, which can be viewed correctly with Lynx, is included below. Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1. goto Globe & Mail site : http://www.theglobeandmail.com/ 2. try reading articles, esp from the Breaking News section 3. every so often, one of the stories will reproducibly crash Konqueror Actual Results: Konqueror crashes as described. Expected Results: rendered the story, as it does the other stories i will try to add the HTML for the latest instance in an attachment. my Gentoo system is very stable otherwise; it uses an AMD Athlon XP 2500 + processor.
Created attachment 25764 [details] HTML version of G&M story on which Konqueror crashed. this file crashes Konqueror 3.2.0 when accessed as a local file. it does not crash Lynx 2.8.5 or Firefox 0.8 .
Konqueror 3.2.0 also crashes when trying to load the same file in the form of the attachment shown in comment 1 . it should be easy to reproduce in that direct manner. Firefox 0.8 does not crash, but there is a long delay & it asks if you want to download a flash plugin.
after upgrading to KDE 3.2.1 , the problem occurs in a different form. other sites appear ok, but Globe & Mail stories now result in 100 % CPU after only part of the file has been downloaded, wh cb cured only by going to another desktop & killing Konqueror. goto http://www.theglobeandmail.com/home & try loading any story. it looks as if KDE maintainers were aware of the problem, but failed to solve it properly in the 3.2.1 bugfix release.
3.2.2 is now out. If this problem persists, please file a report at bugs.kde.org so that they can get it fixed there.
i have emerged KDE 3.2.2 & the problem has not changed: Globe & Mail stories caused Konqueror to stall with 100 % CPU. IIRC Gentoo has always advised users to report bugs to Gentoo, which will then forward them upstream to application developers. has that changed ?
Yes, I don't have the time or resources to report every upstream bug myself.
ok, i have reported it to KDE & the Globe & Mail. thanks for your volunteer time supporting Gentoo.
the Globe & Mail have responded v promptly & promise to investigate, so i suggest you leave this bug open till i have some final resolution from them. there has been a long-running bug 65715 at KDE, which i have now added to. basically, the problem is unnecessarily fancy HTML + JS + whoknows at G & M.
Philip, it's great that you investigate, but it is not our job to fix the code of a company's website or Konqueror.
no problem, i understand that. if i haven't had a response from G&M by the time KDE 3.2.3 comes out, i'll get after them again. otherwise, it's upto you whether you keep this open for other users' information.
