Description Cedric Sodhi 2012-05-27 10:46:38 UTC
mailcap should be documented somewhere, die.net [1] has a manpage, Gentoo, however, appears to have no documentation of mailcap at all. Neither in ./doc nor in ./man

net-mail/metamail provides the mailcap man pages.

However, metamail is abandoned upstream and is a possible candidate for tree removal. It doesn't have a stellar security past either. But the following packages depend on it so treecleaning won't be easy/quick:

app-text/crm114-20100106:mimencode
net-mail/topal-64
net-mail/topal-72
net-misc/hylafaxplus-5.5.1
net-misc/hylafaxplus-5.5.1-r1
net-nntp/tin-2.0.0:mime
net-nntp/tin-2.0.1:mime

I am somewhat reluctantly closing as WONTFIX for now.

I may add two packages which I use and which do at least utilize mailcap, these are

www-client/elinks
mail-client/mutt

I'm sure more people may add a multitude of other packages which are interested in mailcap.

That said, I can not relate to the reason which you provide. If, metamail, which I've never heard of, provides the manpage for mailcap, the obvious solution will be to make instead mailbase provide said manpage. It is then of no concern to us whatever may happen to metamail.

Needless to mention, it's probabaly a bug in itsself that mailbase provides mailcap but the manpage is in a different package.

I hope that under these considerations, you allow me to re-open the bug in the idea that said manpage should henceforth be provided by mailbase.
