Description John Robinson 2004-02-03 08:20:35 UTC
When I installed my Gentoo system I looked at the Gentoo kernel guide at http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/gentoo-kernel.xml to choose my kernel, and it says gs-sources stands for "Gentoo Stable" and "these sources are perfect for servers and High-Availability systems", which is exactly what I wanted.

However, the package description for gs-sources says only: "This kernel stays up to date with current kernel -pres, with recent acpi,evms,win4lin ,futexes,aic79xx, superfreeswan, preempt, and various hw fixes."

Am I alone in thinking that "stable" and -pres are liable to be contradictory? If I remember rightly there hasn't been a gs-sources in a while which wasn't a -pre, but presumably the theory says that non-pres are supposed to be release quality?

It's not that I'm having any particular trouble with my gs-sources or anything - except that the preempt option spectacularly didn't work when I tried it several months ago - but I am concerned. It may well just be that I am misunderstanding something, and it may be that making changes to the documentation (either in the kernel guide or the package info) would help me (and potentially others), but I want to be clear that I'm running a kernel put together by someone a lot smarter than me that does suit the description of "stable" and "for servers and high-availability".

The other may be a duplicate, for which many thanks, but can we have an answer please? :-)

old bug, reopen if necessary

The installation handbook now says "gs-sources (kernel source patched for server usage)" on http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/handbook/handbook-x86.xml?part=1&chap=7 and the package description now says "This kernel stays up to date with current kernel -pre's, with recent ACPI, EVMS, Win4Lin, aic79xx, Super FreeS/WAN, preempt, and various hardware fixes", which by my understanding still seems inconsistent and could do with clarification. This is only a documentation issue, surely whoever created/maintains gs-sources knows what the point of it is?

Also, since gs-sources isn't remotely keeping up with current kernel -pre's - it's still on 2.4.25-pre7 while kernel.org says we're up to 2.4.28-pre4 - either it's moribund or the description needs to be changed.

gs-sources is no longer in portage as its outdated and unmaintained. Please use gentoo-sources for 2.4 or gentoo-dev-sources for 2.6.
