Description dj_aileen 2004-01-20 14:10:59 UTC
I tried to install a gentoo linux on a WmWare Workstation 4.0 virtual machine, but when I try to perform fdisk /dev/sda (wmware simulate a SCSI 0:0 disk) to create partition i receceive the message "unable to open /dev/sda".

Reproducible: Always
Steps to Reproduce:
1. Use a windows 2000 workstation with wmware workstation 4.0 installed.
2. Run a virtual machine with 128 MB Ram and 4GB disk, put the cd1 in the cd rom for autoboot
3. After boot finished, at the command promp (logged as root) try fdisk /dev/sda

Actual Results:
the fdisk command returns the message unable to open /dev/sda (I tryed a lot of
combinations sdb sdc, hda, hdb, ecc. ecc.

Expected Results:
Runnning fdisk on sda disk

did you try modprobing for your scsi hardware ?
Comment 3 Michiel de Bruijne 2004-01-20 14:56:27 UTC
you need to type "gentoo doscsi" on the bootprompt
Comment 4 SpanKY gentoo-dev 2004-04-12 11:31:54 UTC
you need to load the driver first
Comment 5 Chris Gianelloni (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2005-03-25 11:24:26 UTC
Moving these so we can remove the "Install CD" component from "Gentoo Linux".

I apologize to everyone for this spam, but according to the bugzilla developers,
this is the only reasonable way to do this.
