I've needed this dependency since always to print. If I'm terribly wrong and there is a reason to not including this as a dependency, please tell me. +1 on this. I've just found net-print/cups-pdf broken (produces no output files, jobs are automatically stopped) because: E [01/Dec/2011:14:58:48 +0100] Unable to execute /usr/libexec/cups/filter/foomatic-rip: No such file or directory E [01/Dec/2011:14:58:48 +0100] [Job 331] Unable to start filter "foomatic-rip" - No such file or directory. E [01/Dec/2011:14:58:48 +0100] [Job 331] Stopping job because the scheduler could not execute a filter. After installing foomatic-filters, everything works. Please add net-print/foomatic-filters as dependency of net-print/cups or net-print/cups-pdf.
Fixed, thanks.
Just a note here, adding bogus dependecies is not the right approach. I left this bug open in the hope we get some sort of recommendation/suggestion support, since the filters are NOT a dependency of CUPS. Apart from that the right aproach would be to add the filters as a dependency to drivers actually needing them to print, e.g. cups-pdf if they really need it. Also the initial bugreport lacks probably any useful information, which driver, which printer...
I was unpleasantly surprised this morning when an emerge -uDN world and foomatic-filter was pulled in together with a re-install of cups. I use gutenprint and have no need for foomatic stuff. I think Timo Gurr is right. I solved it on my side by adding net-print/cups -filters to /etc/portage/package.use Gerard.
I've been using cups and cups-pdf for years without foomatic-filters. It is simply not a dependency, run-time or otherwise, for either package. To enable this use flag by default in net-print/cups is an outright mistake.
New bug #399101 to get the foomatic-filter use flag removed, or at least to a default off state.
I also use gutenprint (is it ok to add such comment to bug from a regular user like me?), so this useflag is not needed here also.
