Livedvd-amd64-multilib-11 cannot handle my HP Pavilion Nvidia card (GeForce 7150M / nForce 630M, rev.a2). All I get is a tiled, choppy desktop which is totally unusable. I tried the same dvd with two different ATI cards and it works as expected.
attach an /var/log/Xorg.0.log
What DE are you using? If you're using KDE, the driver for your card may have issues with KDE desktop-effects. You can disable the effects by pressing SHIFT+ALT+F12.
Created attachment 265851 [details] Xorg.0.log Here is the Xorg.0.log file produced by the LiveDVD.
Created attachment 265853 [details] Xorg.0.log-Mint The corresponding Mint file, in case it can be of any help. In Mint, Ubuntu, SuSE, Fedora, Puppy and Calculate Gentoo the card works flawlessly.
Unfortunately SHIFT+ALT+F12 only makes the screen patchwork black and white. Thanks for the suggestion anyway.
(In reply to comment #5) > Unfortunately SHIFT+ALT+F12 only makes the screen patchwork black and white. > Thanks for the suggestion anyway. 1.9 it's what's being used on those other livecds, while the Gentoo LiveDVD is using 10.0 which probably has issues with some cards. Can you tell us the version of x11-drivers/xf86-video-nouveau being used on these distros? We tested NVIDIA on a number of cards and it has been known to work, we can't predict how it will work on all models of NVIDIA cards but we can use the info you've giving us to further improve compatibility in future releases. Thanks for your input, these logs will be useful.
(In reply to comment #3) > Created attachment 265851 [details] > Xorg.0.log > > Here is the Xorg.0.log file produced by the LiveDVD. This looks good, can you try changing the desktop environment used in /etc/env.d/90xsession? Perhaps this is an issue with KDE so try with Gnome or XFCE4.
Well, the xf86-video-nouveau used by ubuntu, mint and the Gentoo clone Calculate Linux in identical with the one used by the Gentoo-11 LiveDVD. I failed to switch to Gnome or XFCE as the kdm screen is also jumbled, so the machine boots into KDE by default. For the same reason I can't even install the distro. Is there any hack that would change that? Any ideas?

On Calculate Linux it is exactly the same. On (installed) Mint, it is 201008 instead of 201130. To be exact, its full name is xorg-video-nouveau 1:0.0.16+git201008. I'm afraid I have no access to any other distros at the moment. I'll try your gnome solution after work today. Cheers!
Well, I changed kdm first to gdm with gnome and then to xdm with xfce4. In both cases, the desktop is horribly distorted, a bit less so than in KDE, but totally illegible. Then I tried the X -configure idea, but unfortunately, the command crashes producing half a page of errors, which I might capture into a file if I knew how and if you were interested in seeing them. Thanks again for your precious hints.

Not exactly, Calculate Linux is using "x11-base/xorg-drivers-1.9 & x11-base/xorg-server-1.9.4" while Gentoo LiveDVD is on "x11-base/xorg-drivers-1.10 & x11-base/xorg-server-1.10.0" so you can't really compare the two. What i suggest is to run the following commands so we can help you further. X -configure|wgetpaste dmesg|wgetpaste lspci|wgetpaste This is about all we can do from here as you're the only person having issues with NVIDIA and we have already tested it on various cards with success, Hopefully we can figure out what's wrong and have a fix on the next release. Good luck. likewhoa

You're right about the 1.10 version. The trouble is that despite a quick search I made, I wasn't able to find another distro using it so I can't tell whether my problem has something to do with this version or not. In the meantime, I tried to emerge the proprietary driver and use it, but in the process I noticed that one of the files it downloaded was the 1.9.4 version of the xorg. Could this mean that my four-year-old nvidia is quite simply not compatible with the 1.10 version? Anyway, if the files I am sending you do not tell you something specific, just drop the matter. If I'm the only one having the problem, it is not worth your time and effort. Thanks anyway.

Can you create and or attach the xorg.conf generate file by the distros that it works on, as i noticed on the 'puppy linux' the generated xorg.conf doesn't not use nouveau but instead it's using the 'nv' drivers which makes me suspect that your card might not be compatible with recent nouveau and or nvidia-drivers for that matter and if so, then try the xorg.conf that i will attach now on the livedvd and report back.
Created attachment 266197 [details] xorg.conf for use on old nvidia cards.
It seems to be so. I didn't even know the nouveau driver existed. All the distros I have used use nv. I did however try to use the trick you propose with the puppy xorg file and I got stuck, as I suppose will happen with your xorg.conf as well, because I got a message saying that the nv driver could not be loaded as it conflicted with nouveau. I tried to rmmod nouveau, but I got the message that this driver could not be unistalled because it was "in use" despite the fact that I was not using a graphical environment. I had run out of ideas so I gave up. Unless somebody can tell me how I can uninstall this nouveau driver, by brute force if necessary. In the meantime I downloaded the brand new Ututo distro, another gentoo clone. I'll give it a try tomorrow to see what it uses and I'll report back to you if I spot something interesting or out of the ordinary.
Well, I just made a terrible mistake. The Mint distro I am now using DOES use the nouveau driver. I just hadn't noticed it so far because there is no xorg.conf file so such details can easily slip by. Which means the nouveau driver has no problem with my card on Ubuntu and Mint. The mystery thickens...
