http://linuxtv.org/news.php?entry=2011-03-02.mchehab new release at linuxtv.org folds in some bugfixes and v4l2 support "Xawtv3 remained without updates for a long time. So, distros were adding bug fix patches on their packages. Also, some tools used to support just V4L1 API. A series of patches were added, incorporating the bugfixes found on the distros and converting it to use V4L2 API. After a long time without updates, keeping on version 3.95 since April 2010, Several bugs were discovered and fixed on distros. However, as the package were not maintained anymore, those fixes never reached upstream. I and Dmitry Butskoy (Fedora maintainer for xawtv) did an effort to port the patches we found on some distros and port them into Xawtv3. So, version 3.100 should have less bugs than version 3.95. Another series of patches were added, converting it to use V4L2 API only, as V4L1 API was deprecated and removed from upstream on kernel 2.6.38. Enjoy! Mauro Carvalho Chehab"
That's amazing. And there's a http://git.linuxtv.org/xawtv4.git too.
Created attachment 267977 [details] xawtv-3.100.ebuild
Created attachment 267979 [details] xawtv folder for overlay Folder ready for an overlay
Started with the existing ebuild in portage and modified the source location and commented out no longer necessary patches. It's working here for me.
please put this into portage tree asap
Just wanted to point out that the HOMPAGE value in the 3.100 ebuild still points to http://bytesex.org/xawtv. This re-directs to http://www.kraxel.org/blog/linux/xawtv/ where the developer/blogger states: "I stopped maintaining xawtv a few years ago though. Nowdays the xawtv git trees are hosted at linuxtv.org. 3.x is here and 4.x is there." Perhaps the HOMEPAGE value should be updated to either: http://linuxtv.org or: http://linuxtv.org/projects.php I realize this is essentially an orphaned project. Thanks in advance to whomever can deal with this and give it some of the ebuild love it deserves.

Created attachment 334046 [details] Ebuild for lastest version 3.102 Updated ebuild to upstream version 3.102. In doing so made useflags and dependencies consistent with current configure script. Build and works for me.
Created attachment 345004 [details] xawtv-3.103.ebuild Building upon the previous 3.102 ebuild, I've bumped to 3.103 and moved around a few functions & cleaned up some things, to go along with the EAPI bump.
Because I could no longer compile 3.95, I looked for other options and found this bug report. Thanks for the ebuild, it compiled fine, with the following warnings: * QA Notice: Files built without respecting LDFLAGS have been detected * Please include the following list of files in your report: * /usr/bin/fbtv * /usr/bin/streamer * /usr/bin/scantv * /usr/bin/webcam * /usr/bin/xawtv * /usr/bin/pia * /usr/bin/v4lctl
confirmed. the ebuild + files/webcamrc work perfectly ! This release has an upgrade videodev2.h header which supports more pixel formats what is useful (= the only way) to get a couple of old webcam working.
Not blocking EAPI=1 anymore, we now have an ebuild of the old version with updated EAPI
I think it's probably the best if this package get a dedicated maintainer, is anyone willing to help out as a proxied maintainer here?
Either this gets bumped or removed. Current version doesn't build and doesn't work with newer kernels.
(In reply to Ryan Hill from comment #14) > Either this gets bumped or removed. Current version doesn't build and > doesn't work with newer kernels. Can you be clear on which versions? The 4-n series?
I'll investigate proxying this. Xawtv is quite a useful entry-level tool for linux video applications. I have one system with 3.95-r2 successfully installed: [ebuild R #] media-tv/xawtv-3.95-r2::gentoo USE="X alsa lirc nls opengl xv -aalib -dv -motif -quicktime -xext -zvbi (-mmx%)" CPU_FLAGS_X86="(-mmx)" on Linux mediamatrix-officedev 4.1.12-gentoo #1 SMP Wed Dec 30 06:22:38 GMT 2015 x86_64 Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-2710QE CPU @ 2.10GHz GenuineIntel GNU/Linux so I see no reason why we can't weave the new LinuxTV builds into the portage tree as proposed.
unmasked for now until M. Everitt attempts a repair on this
(In reply to Ian Delaney from comment #17) > unmasked for now until M. Everitt attempts a repair on this Err... the thing to do is to keep it masked until the bugs that caused their masking are fixed :/
