Description Nico Schlömer 2010-01-13 00:02:15 UTC
Hi,

in HDF5, there are two main development lines, 1.6 (legacy) and 1.8 (stable).
They have a different API, so a couple of large software projects still use the old 1.6 API.
That still works alright on Gentoo as 1.8 is not stable yet, but I'm afraid it will cause some disruption when the stabilization gets through (bug #299710).

This looks like a typical candidate for slotting to me.

Cheers,
Nico

PS. Oh, and 1.6.10 is released for some time, please bump.

Reproducible: Always

hdf5 won't be slotted as discussed in various bugs before (ex: bug # 289025).
hdf5-1.6.x in portage tree is buggy and no one has the time to take care of it when we spend enough time on 1.8.x.

1.6.x should not be considered as stable.

.. which would be a sensible thing to do.

Should it be marked stable, then, at all? When I look at the tree now, it seems like 1.6.4 is "stable", while all of 1.8 is "testing". ?:)

Well, I trust you guys will fix this swift.

Cheers,
Nico
