not the only thing it fails on (with USE="hpcups libnotify scanner") checking for sane_open in -lsane... no configure: error: cannot find sane-backends-devel support (or --disable-scan-build) weird thing is that I've got sane-backends (-> libsane) installed...
(In reply to comment #4) oh... I've found out in config.log that it was caused by missing sys-libs/libieee1284
not fixed in hplip-3.9.12-r1, will attach another build log
Created attachment 219593 [details] build log for net-print/hplip-3.9.12-r1 seems to be the same issue, suspect missing dependancy
Hm, why are maintainers not on CC?
(In reply to comment #6) > not fixed in hplip-3.9.12-r1, will attach another build log > It should build if you install net-analyzer/net-snmp. Can you please try.

Can you provide the full build log and the output of "emerge --info net-print/hplip" without sys-libs/libieee1284 installed. Do you also have the parport use flag enabled as it seems you are using a device attached to the parallel port? Also it is strange that it errors out about sane-backends.

With snmp installed hplip builds and installs fine. If you like I could write a patch for the ebuild, since from my previous tinkering this seems simple enough. David

@David Watzke: Can you please provide the requested information from comment #10.

It is no longer true. I don't really know why.
So closing this now.
