The GPE is slowly moving into the tree. As there is already a minimal environment available on the portage tree, this handbook was written to instruct people willing to test or try GPE. Target platforms are low resource desktops, netbooks and PDAs.

Comment on attachment 199378 [details] gpe-config.xml Sorry if some English errors were left behind. Sometimes vim doesn't update spell check on some regions. The figure gpe-mb-session.png can be downloaded from here: www.gentoo.org/~miknix/gpe.png The figure link was supposed to be /images/gpe-mb-session.png
Created attachment 211565 [details] gpe-config.xml Okay, here's my improved version of the original months-old draft. GPE team, please check this for accuracy, as well as any additions that should be made for new packages or different config files. For example, I wrote a new section on installing GPE as there is a meta-package. I also made the rendered version available in my devspace, though the picture won't show up until it's on www.gentoo.org. http://dev.gentoo.org/~nightmorph/gpe-config.xml Also, what's the status on getting this whole thing stabilized? We can't tell users to keyword packages in our official docs, as we document only the stable tree. However, I *could* add a draft disclaimer . . . that would give it semi-official status, and as soon as the GPE packages are stable, I could remove the disclaimer. Whatcha think?

Most of (if not all) packages are in the tree long enough to go through keywording and stabilization. There are also no (currently) opened bugs. However, there was not enough user feedback (gentoo forums included) so I can't really tell if GPE runs smoothly on desktop (besides my own). > We can't tell > users to keyword packages in our official docs, as we document only the stable > tree. What about leaving it on the dev space? This bug is pretty much the only "GPE" one on bugzilla so won't users find this easily (using bugzilla search) if they want to install GPE? I would really like to get more feedback first before "opening" this to the masses. Then there is another little detail.. Current GPE on portage is still *quite* minimalist. It lacks some apps for managing configurations (gpe-conf) and stuff that people now-a-days take for guaranteed. Being gpe-conf a big bottleneck for us because it has hardcoded debian/familiar stuff which upstream is *very* slowly fixing and I have not the time to fix either.

Sure, not a problem. I edited the guide on my site to include the picture, but the one I have in my personal docs tree will have the right location on www.gentoo.org, as that's the version that will go into our CVS eventually. Just let us know when you want the guide to go live, whether with a "draft" disclaimer or as an official doc.
Marking as LATER. Once the GPE stuff has been stabilized, we'll be happy to add it to our main /doc/ tree. So please reopen this bug once the GPE packages are marked stable. Thanks.
