Description Thomas Morgan 2009-07-10 08:47:01 UTC
If I run xine or gmplayer in an X session and later kill the X server,
I get a blank screen and have to reboot by logging in from another
computer.

I also get a blank screen sometimes when I leave the X server running
and go away from the computer for a time. Logging in remotely shows
that the X server is no longer running. The amount of idle time
necessary for this to happen seems unpredictable, but I think the
minimum is roughly 15 minutes. It is almost sure to happen if the
computer is left idle more than a few hours.

(ACPI also blanks the screen after 10 minutes of inactivity, but this
is not the same phenomenon; any input event brings the display back.)

It's not necessary to play any media with xine; starting it with no
arguments and seeing the splash screen is enough to trigger the bug.
But gmplayer must play a video to trigger the bug; the splash screen
is not enough.

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1.Run xinit.
2.Run xine with no arguments.
3.Kill sawfish (which kills X).

Actual Results:
Screen is blank and unresponsive.

Expected Results:
Should return to virtual terminal from which X was started.

glxgears does not trigger the bug.

I'm using sawfish without any screensaver or desktop.

Possibly relevant packages:

x11-base/xorg-server-1.5.3-r6
x11-drivers/xf86-video-intel-2.6.3-r1
x11-wm/sawfish-1.3.3
media-video/xine-ui-0.99.5-r1
media-video/mplayer-1.0_rc2_p20090322

Output from emerge --info:

I should probably mention that my computer is a Dell 700m laptop with this video card:

@Thomas,

We're going to stabilize xorg-server 1.6 and newer intel drivers. Could you
head over to bug #282290 and grab the latest stabilization list and update your
system?

Please don't hesitate to reopen this bug if the upgrades don't fix your problems.

Don't forget to read and follow the upgrade guides [1] [2].

Thanks
