Description Hugo Gonçalves 2009-04-02 19:18:52 UTC
This ebuild won't build against a 2.6.29 kernel. A newer version of open-vm-tools that builds on newer kernels is available: http://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=204462&package_id=244023&release_id=669290
Also, vmware-guestd as been deprecated and vmtoolsd should now be used instead.

Thank you for all your hard work.

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1. emerge open-vm-tools against gentoo-sources-2.6.29

The version you suggested is already available in the vmware overlay [1], which you can try out through layman. Could you please give this version a test and let me know if there's any issues with it (I hadn't spotted the swap to vmtoolsd, so that would be a good area to test). Thanks... 5:)

open-vm-tools-0.0.20090318.154848 compiles here without problems.
(vanilla-sources-2.6.28.9,gcc-4.3.2-r3,glibc-2.8_p20080602-r1)

What about the newest open-vm-tools-0.0.20090423.162451?

There are some modules which the current ebuild wont install: vmci vsock vmxnet3
Especially vmxnet3 would be cool:

ping... 2.6.29 is planned to go stable on 23rd may, would be nice to see this fixed

newest open vm tools is 20090522

it'd be nice if there was an update to portage or the layman overlay

It seems that it is well known that the open-vm-tools in the official tree are completely broken for the current stable kernel. I think this versions should be masked - this would have saved much time for me.
(Additionally I would like the official tree updated to a working version of open-vm-tools, because I really like them.)

I tried 0.0.20090318.154848 from the overlay and although it compiles against 2.6.29, it doesn't create the init script

open-vm-tools 2009.05.22 ebuild is in the portage tree. Could you try it out?
Could ealaborate on init scripts problem?
