I have an NVIDIA RIVA TNT2 Graphic Card on my i686 Pentium III (Coppermine) and I've tried to merge x11-drivers/nvidia-drivers-71.86.06 package to enable 2D and 3D acceleration with my Linux gentoo 2.6.27-gentoo-r8 and always I recieve the same error.(I choosed this version of nvidia-drivers because this is version that recomends nvidia's official web page) Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1.emerge =nvidia-drivers-71.86.06 (I can't install this package) 2.emerge =nvidia-drivers-71.86.07 --> it works (I've tried too 71.86.08 version with "~x86" accept_keywords 3.I reboot my system and the desktop colors are wrong, like an old system (like a 256 color mode) Actual Results: * * ERROR: x11-drivers/nvidia-drivers-71.86.06 failed. * Call stack: * ebuild.sh, line 49: Called src_compile * environment, line 3634: Called linux-mod_src_compile * environment, line 2691: Called die * The specific snippet of code: * eval "emake HOSTCC="$(tc-getBUILD_CC)" CROSS_COMPILE=${CHOST}- LDFLAGS="$(get_abi_LDFLAGS)" ${BUILD_FIXES} ${BUILD_PARAMS} ${BUILD_TARGETS} " || die "Unable to emake HOSTCC="$(tc-getBUILD_CC)" CROSS_COMPILE=${CHOST}- LDFLAGS="$(get_abi_LDFLAGS)" ${BUILD_FIXES} ${BUILD_PARAMS} ${BUILD_TARGETS}"; * The die message: * Unable to emake HOSTCC=i686-pc-linux-gnu-gcc CROSS_COMPILE=i686-pc-linux-gnu- LDFLAGS= IGNORE_CC_MISMATCH=yes V=1 SYSSRC=/usr/src/linux SYSOUT=/lib/modules/2.6.27-gentoo-r8/build clean module * * If you need support, post the topmost build error, and the call stack if relevant. * A complete build log is located at '/var/tmp/portage/x11-drivers/nvidia-drivers-71.86.06/temp/build.log'. * The ebuild environment file is located at '/var/tmp/portage/x11-drivers/nvidia-drivers-71.86.06/temp/environment'. * >>> Failed to emerge x11-drivers/nvidia-drivers-71.86.06, Log file: >>> '/var/tmp/portage/x11-drivers/nvidia-drivers-71.86.06/temp/build.log'

How can I solve the problem? Which version of the package driver is better for my system, 71.86.06, 71.86.07 or 71.86.08?
Doesn't look like a bug to me.
Sounds like a problem with your config, something is making it default to a lower color depth. Also, 71.86.06 doesn't support kernel 2.6.27, use the newer ones for that.

This bug is closely related to 64306 I'm using: [ebuild R ] x11-drivers/nvidia-drivers-71.86.07 and 2.6.24-gentoo-r8 I issued the command: eselect opengl set nvidia That's when the color depth got crunched down to 8 instead of the desired 24 Erich F
