It compiles its own entire copy of sci-mathematics/pari and it doesn't even use the installed sci-mathematics/pari which it DEPENDS on.
It's a clear case of "upstream knows better how to do things". Feel free to participate on the upstream bug tracker... :/

Basically, for the forseeable future, this is a "wontfix", because all the upstream code is dependent on the legacy version, but the maintainers of pari have no interest in keeping old versions of pari in tree. Feel free to reopen if working patches can be provided for recent pari versions. Otherwise, every opportunity to remove Math-Pari from tree will be considered.
