Description Fab 2008-12-29 17:42:21 UTC
Hi,

I'm currently testing the news feature using eselect-news with the sample news
item from bug #251810.

The news-gentoo.read file is created by the eselect news module
with wrong permissions. GLEP 42 say :

> All news item related files should be root owned and in the
> portage group with the group write (and, for directories, execute)
> bits set.

When running as non-root, the eselect news module should maybe die if some
required files doesn't exist, and ask the user to run it with root privileges
to create the missing files with correct permissions.

Please run the following commands to see the problem. Thanks.

# cd /var/lib/gentoo/news/
# rm news*
# eselect news list
Unread news items:
  (none found)
Read news items:
  (none found)

(workaround for bug #252995, can't use --pretend to regenerate
news-gentoo.skip and news-gentoo.unread)
# emerge -1 eselect-news

 * IMPORTANT: 1 news items need reading for repository 'gentoo'.
 * Use eselect news to read news items.

Calculating dependencies... done!

Don't CC maintainers when you cannot assign bugs.

Is this still an issue with "eselect news-tng" of eselect-1.1*?

No, it works fine with it, thanks.
Comment 5 Ulrich Müller gentoo-dev 2009-10-12 08:29:31 UTC
eselect-news is going away (see bug 288560), so nothing to fix here.
