Description Jason Wever (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2003-06-30 08:01:09 UTC
Sun Blade 100s do not get a useable modeline from xfree-4.3.0 when starting the
X server. Configurations that worked in previous releases do not work in this
release. More research is needed to see if this is a Gentoo bug or an XFree bug.

I think I vaguely recall something funny about this when I tried xfree-4.3.x awhile ago on my Blade 100. I think Xfree was sending bad HSync values. You might be able to get it to work if you comment out any values in the config file to sync values, specifically horizontal and vertical. Backdraw is you'll be stuck in 640x480. I'd liken this to being an xfree bug, probably with the onboard ATI Mach64 video card.

This appears to be an xfree issue. I tried compiling from source to eliminate any Gentoo related problems and it still does not work.

Gatling (IRC nick)/nadamaximus (forum nick) found the solution to this problem in forum post
http://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic.php?t=67790&sid=e2fa1c03fc1ed75c5db6216fd21fbf59. As it turns out, xfree-4.3.0 needs an additional option for ATI drivers on non-x86 platforms. This option is called "reference_clock" and more information can be found at http://www.xfree86.org/~dawes/4.3.0/ati5.html#26.

Much thanks for the heads up! :)

we should document this
Comment 5 Jason Wever (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2003-10-18 03:29:07 UTC
Re-assigning to blademan so he can document this for the eventual sparc FAQ
Comment 6 Sven Blumenstein (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2003-10-20 23:06:18 UTC
Joe,
can you put this up somewhere (maybe temporary in the installation guide
until we got a FAQ ready)?

Will do.

This info is now in the SPARC FAQ which is available at http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/gentoo-sparc-faq.xml
