Tested on x86. (emerge --info as in Bug 230511, comment 4.)
By the way, surfer looks like a very nice piece of 
software. Oddly enough, nobody is interested in putting
it in the science overlay, though it is almost five 
months since the bug was posted.

I added surfer-0.0.158.1 in the science overlay.
Let me know if you would like to add more things to the ebuild

This looks dead upstream:

There's a newer release on the homepage, but it looks like only binaries (i.e. no source code) are provided. To make matters worse, Java in Gentoo has been in a downward spiral for years. I don't think there's any real hope for this.
