I couldn't get your proposed ebuild to work, it doesn't configure the package
before trying to compile it.

Attached a new proposed ebuild and patch.

I'm not interested in this one.
It is based on x11-plugins/wmmemfree (which is already in Portage) and does not display memory usage correctly on 2.6 kernels. I wrote a patch for wmmemfree, but I'm not going to fix this one, too.

BTW, you can run wmmemfree (which has the very same interface) as a gnome applet by using gnome-extra/gnome-swallow...
