Description Michaelian Ennis 2007-11-17 15:16:36 UTC
The aoe (ATA-over-Ethernet) driver isn't on the install media. Having this driver on the the install media allows users to do things like: dd installations from a network attached disk (or vblade) or backup an existing installation across the network from the network. Excellent for fast deplyment or forensic capture. For the added functionality it seems like it is worth the 40K. Full disclosure - I do work at Coraid. But I am requesting this feature as a Gentoo user not a Coraid employee.

Reproducible: Always

What do we need besides kernel support? Anything?

(By the way, the "40K" argument is bunk. If we added every "40K" item everyone asked for, we'd have a 700MB "minimal" CD. That being said, it's a driver, so we'll be adding it, anyway. ;p)
Comment 2 Brent Baude (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2007-11-20 20:41:00 UTC
Chris - I think you also need the userland tools called sys-block/aoetools ~18k. At least I did when I ran this about a year ago.

AEO is a neat feature and the requestors description is accurate.

AoE tools are largely diagnostic or hardware maintenance, so I think they are un necessary. Plus once the driver is ther you can run them from the network if you need them. :)

I understand.

 Awsome.

OK. I enabled the driver in CVS for 2007.1, but I've not yet gotten the userland tools. I've not decided if I want them on the minimal or not or just on the LiveCD/DVD media...
Comment 5 Chris Gianelloni (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2007-11-24 22:38:52 UTC
OK. I've got the tools on the livecd/livedvd specs for 2007.1, but not the minimal CD.
Comment 6 Michaelian Ennis 2007-12-04 20:31:03 UTC
I've updated the ebuild for the userland tools in bug # 200475. v12 is a little more than a year behind.

Should 145934 be marked duplicate of this?
Comment 8 Chris Gianelloni (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2008-04-12 18:21:20 UTC
No, they're two completely different things. One is for support on the CD, another is for support in genkernel, which would be required for booting from AOE.
Comment 9 Chris Gianelloni (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2008-04-12 18:21:57 UTC
By the way, have you tested if the support is sufficient in 2008.0 Beta 1?
Comment 10 Michaelian Ennis 2008-04-12 19:19:12 UTC
I successfully tested the minimal a week ago. I noticed the userland tools weren't on there but then remembered they were on the full install instead. I'll pull it and get back with you.
Comment 11 Michaelian Ennis 2008-04-15 21:04:10 UTC
I tested livecd-i686-installer-2008.0_beta1.iso successfully today. Works great; I was able to use dd to back up and reinstall a system from networked storage (via /dev/etherd/exx.x) to /dev/hda and boot it. Is there any reason to try the other 2008.0 architectures?
Comment 12 Chris Gianelloni (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2008-04-16 00:01:32 UTC
Nope. That was all that I needed.

Thanks
Comment 13 Jorge Manuel B. S. Vicetto (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2011-08-27 18:22:16 UTC
I'm adding sys-block/aoetools to the admincd specs.

In any case, this bug seems to have been fixed for some time, so I'm closing it.
