Description Shaun Lippy 2007-10-27 07:21:27 UTC
I am able to start up my gnome environment as always, and everything looks normal. However, if I try to open ANY application - a terminal window, for example - the application will blink a couple of times, then what appears to be an error dialog/message box will appear, blink a couple of times (no text appears, only a gray rectangle with a bit of the outline that makes it look like an error dialog); usually at this point, the entire desktop (except the desktop background) will disappear, and I will be unable to do anything - even a right mouse click at this point doesn't bring up a context menu. I have tried re-emerging gnome and nautilus, but I still have this problem. Gnome was emerged recently with a bunch of other packages, and I'm slightly embarassed to say that I didn't take notice of every single package - is it possible that something else was emerged that would be causing this problem? I've had similar problems before that were related to my xorg.conf file, but that seems to be ok.

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1. Boot into Gentoo (not sure of the current kernel version, I can get that info
if it would help. It's relatively current).
2. The graphical login appears, and I am able to log in to my account.
3. Gnome will appear and look perfectly normal; however, if I try to open any application - a terminal, my home folder, the trash - the app will blink a couple of times, never fully rendered, and then what appears to be an error dialog (no text, again partially rendered) will blink a couple of times, and then my desktop will either go blank (except the background) immediately or upon my next attempt to open an app or to pull down a menu.

Actual Results:
Gnome is completely unresponsive, and I am forced to reboot the machine (I'm not sure of the hot-key command to kill gnome, so it is possible that I could somehow kill the X session and get back to a command prompt without rebooting).

Expected Results:
I should be able to run happily in gnome as I have always done for the past couple of years on this machine.

1) Make sure you run "emerge -pvDuN world" when updating
2) try to run "revdep-rebuild" (install app-portage/gentoolkit if necessary)
3) please provide the output of "emerge --info" here

you might want to check that you have the latest libpng.
Not the 1.2.21-r2 release at least, also if you could try with 1.2.22 (maybe it's unrelated, try remi's comments first)

This is the result of emerge --info.

This is the output from the execution of the command emerge --info.

Debug file created by nautilus

I had a suspicion that nautilus may be the problem, as I have had similar issues with nautilus in the past. Lo and behold, this debug file was dumped by nautilus upon my most recent failure. I have already tried cleaning and re-emerging nautilus, to no avail.

I always emerge with "emerge -uavDN world" after running an "emerge --sync".

I also tried running the "revdep-rebuild" command; no luck.

I see you have dbus errors in that nautilus log file. How are you starting your gnome session?

Is /etc/init.d/dbus running?

Output from revdep-rebuild

This is a text file containing the output from the revdep-rebuild command. It appears that a package is not available in portage.
Comment 11 Shaun Lippy 2007-10-28 16:49:35 UTC
I have attached a new nautilus debug error log that was created after running the dbus service. Also, I tried to rerun revdep-rebuild and it failed, complaining that dev-cpp/libgnomecanvasmm-2.12.0 is not available. I emerged that package, and the latest version in portage is version 2.16.0.
Comment 12 Gilles Dartiguelongue (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2007-10-28 18:20:19 UTC
according to the log, nautilus is receiving SIGABRT (this is bad :))

do you have hal installed/running ?

as you can see in the output of revdep-rebuild, if the ebuild doesn't exist anymore you can try the -X option that will try to merge a more recent version of the application. This is the default in recent versions but not in the one you have.

Latest version of nautilus error log.

I have ensured that hal is installed and running, and I have now sucessfully completed a revdep-update (I believe). This is the latest error from nautilus.
