Description Steve L 2007-09-18 15:28:23 UTC
1) Please can we change the default partitioning recommendation to include a
home partition? It really is basic and recommended in other distros. It's
really hard having to deal with someone who's hosed their drive (saying you
should have kept a backup doesn't cut it) when we haven't even recommended a
basic step which would have at least meant they kept their personal files.

This kind of thing does happen to users, and leaves the ones I've dealt with feeling really hacked off. A small change would make a big difference.

2) Not mentioning cfdisk is just cruel imo. I'd recommend cfdisk and if it doesn't like their harddisk controller (rare ime) a link to the existing fdisk stuff would be enough.

3) I think one should mention that all ebuilds (and associated files) merged from the portage tree are always checked with md5sum, so data corruption is always spotted well before anything is installed. This is also useful from a security pov.

Reproducible: Always

[nor does giving info which you already know]
I did search for this issue and I have again, and I still can't find it. Would you mind extending yourself to actually giving me a bug number? This was point 1, ie the most important since it can, and has, lead to completely uneccessary data loss.

> 2. dupe, idem
OK found this one, bug 26903 which i was closed as LATER 2003-08-26:
"With the end of the fdisk/cfdisk discussion on gentoo-dev, may I - or svyatogor - mark this bug as LATER (i.e. when the handbook installation chapter
is finished)? Then we can rediscuss all, or just add information on cfdisk."
..and then, after a couple of duplicates two and a half years later, by you with the same resolution, 2006-04-11.

Were you planning to actually fix it at some point? If a patch is what you need just say so. There's no point me providing a patch that you're just going to bin: I'd rather write code, thanks.

"I personally would recommend cfdisk in the install guide, and link to a quickie guide of fdisk. My idea is to make the install as easy as possible, and
cfdisk is significantly easier to use and more intuitive than fdisk (for me and
most people I've talked with about this, at least)."

> 3. not relevant
Relevant to what? It's certainly relevant to being able to use Reiser, which you yourself stated you would be downgrading as a recommendation, or any other FS such as j/xfs which a user might like to try out, and thus the disk partitioning page. The portage tree is ideal for the reasons stated.

Xavier, when you declare a bug to be a duplicate, please do so technically through Bugzilla so that the bug of which this is a duplicate is referenced. That will help us all.

> 3. not relevant

Not relevant to what? The documentation in the installation handbook? Please explain why Steve's suggestion of a more prominent mention of md5sum check in portage is not relevant to the documentation.
