xu4 0.9 has a lot of problems on amd64 (possibly other platforms), for instance, it segfaults in dungeons. This updated ebuild pulls the sources from the cvs tree from a period (current actually) where the development 1.1 branch is pretty darn solid (from my playing thus far). The 1.0 beta3 has a lot of problems, even with after correcting many code issues, it's still nowhere as stable as today's cvs sources. It would be nice if somebody on x86 and ppc platforms could try it out and post results. For now, I only have ~amd64 enabled.
