In the current stable freetype, kerning is completely disabled. Consequently, it's unusable for anything where nice text rendering is required, e.g. gimp, openoffice. Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1. use freetype-2.1.10-r2 2. type "VA" in openoffice 3. notice that letter spacing is huge 4. notice that enabling/disabling kerning in format/character does nothing. 5. compare with sane freetype (2.2.1, or Ubuntu freetype). Actual Results: Kerning can't be enabled. Expected Results: Kerning should work. THERE IS A PATCH AVAILABLE: It has been posted at bug 128760. Apparently Debian suffered from the same bug: http://nashi.altmuehlnet.de/pipermail/scribus/2006-September/019796.html Another solution is to upgrade to freetype-2.2.1.
all archs now have freetype-2.3 stable.
