Description Denilson Sá Maia 2007-02-23 02:59:31 UTC
This bug is a feature request.

I would love to have "netcat" and "telnet" available at livecd and installcd (in fact, at any gentoo bootable cd/dvd). Both software are very small, but very useful sometimes.

If everything else fails, we can access SMTP or POP using telnet.

And netcat is a swiss-army tool. I've used it to transfer files or even to clone hard disks or partitions. I may also use it for a plain "chat", if nothing else is available.

Of course, there are a lot more tools I think would be useful to have (ddrescue or dd_rescue, ntfsprogs...), but this bug is only about netcat and telnet.

Thanks.

Uhh... netcat's been on the LiveCD since its inception. I won't be adding it to the minimal CD specs, however, since I am trying to keep the minimal down to a true bare minimum required to install and nothing more, to keep size down.

I would like to second the request that NETCAT and TELNET to be added on the minimal install ISO.

Their usefulness is enough to pay the little extra space needed for them on the minimal ISO - I'm currently under a intranet with little connection to the "other side", and I would loved being hable to netcar the stage3 tarball to the internal machines I'm installing.

(would be just marvelous doing that from my Android phone, by the way). :-)

The install-cd is meant as the required minimum to perform common installs.
If you want more tools, check the admin-cd - bug 352152.

Thank you for your answer - it makes sense, as there's nothing special on the minimum-iso, and the admin-cd (at least, for am64) is just a little bigger.

Unfortunatelly, currenlty the admin-cd was not mentioned on the "Choosing the Right Instalation Medium" ( http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/handbook/handbook-x86.xml?part=1&chap=2 ), neither was found on http://distfiles.gentoo.org/releases/x86/current-iso/ - so I assumed that my choices for x86 are only live-dvd or minimum-iso.

Should I apply a change request for the documentation?

I'll talk to the documentation team and ask them to add a note about the administration-cd.

The correct links for the admin-cd are the following:
http://distfiles.gentoo.org/releases/amd64/autobuilds/current-admincd-amd64/
http://distfiles.gentoo.org/releases/x86/autobuilds/current-admincd-x86/ (not available yet)

I'll do my best to fix the fio issue that has been preventing the x86 admin-cd from building for a long time.
