In the install direction we see: Code listing 11.2: Emerging mirrorselect # emerge mirrorselect // Simply run mirrorselect after emerging it, as it uses a nice GUI interface # mirrorselect So I did all that and failed with: !!! ERROR: sys-libs/ncurses-5.3-r1 failed. !!! Function econf, Line 11, Exit code 1 !!! econf failed Reproducible: Didn't try Steps to Reproduce: 1. Follow the install script on a virgin system. 2. Unpack the stage 1 tarball from the livecd 3. Emerge sync to obtain portage-2.0.46-r12 4. follow instructions in Code Listing 11.2 of the web installation instructions. Actual Results: See details above. It would be wonderful if a screen log was maintained throughout the install process (perhaps with tee), so much useful stuff scrolls off the screen.
After completion of stage 1 it is possible to emerge and run mirrorselect. It leaves GENTOO_MIRRORS completely unreadable, but apparently functional. Is this its usual behaviour?
your error with ncurses cannot be helped unless you post the actual error that the configure displayed
Unfortunately, there was nothing left on the screen except the three !!! lines I typed. We really need a screen log. I'm way past that stage now, having completed stage 1 and into stage 2, so I can't reproduce the error. I'll try again on my next stage 1 install.
ok, well if you can provide more info we'll be glad to help :) till then, we shall nuke this bug
actually, this is an issue with documentation ... at stage1, you cannot emerge anything ... you have to bootstrap first ...
So perhaps we need mirrorselect on the stage 1 CD ready for use. By the way, I had to remove the unreadable multiline text which mirrorselect put in my make.conf and revert to my hand-written mirror selection list before stage 2 would run very far.
Yeah, mirrorselect should be included on the livecd. As for the documentation, it is in the wrong place, and I will move it to after the stage installs. But, for this to work correctly, it should be on the livecd.
I will fix this.
well, due to problems with mirrorselect, it has been removed from the install guide, so this bug is no longer valid.
