I did 'emerge --newuse sys-power/nut' after adding the 'cgi' USE flag in /etc/portage/package.use. 'equery uses sys-power/nut' reports that the package was installed with this flag. But neither the files in /usr/share/nut nor the ewarning defined in the ebuild show up. The man pages and config files in /etc/nut are fine. ================================= emerge --info ================================= Portage 2.1.1 (default-linux/x86/2006.1, gcc-4.1.1, glibc-2.4-r3, 2.6.17-gentoo-r8 i686) ================================================================= System uname: 2.6.17-gentoo-r8 i686 Celeron (Coppermine) Gentoo Base System version 1.12.5 Last Sync: Tue, 24 Oct 2006 02:50:01 +0000 ccache version 2.3 [enabled] app-admin/eselect-compiler: [Not Present] dev-java/java-config: 1.3.7, 2.0.30 dev-lang/python: 2.4.3-r4 dev-python/pycrypto: 2.0.1-r5 dev-util/ccache: 2.3 dev-util/confcache: [Not Present] sys-apps/sandbox: 1.2.17 sys-devel/autoconf: 2.13, 2.59-r7 sys-devel/automake: 1.4_p6, 1.5, 1.6.3, 1.7.9-r1, 1.8.5-r3, 1.9.6-r2 sys-devel/binutils: 2.16.1-r3 sys-devel/gcc-config: 1.3.13-r4 sys-devel/libtool: 1.5.22 virtual/os-headers: 2.6.17-r1 ACCEPT_KEYWORDS="x86" AUTOCLEAN="yes" CBUILD="i686-pc-linux-gnu" CFLAGS="-O3 -march=pentium3 -fomit-frame-pointer -pipe" CHOST="i686-pc-linux-gnu" CONFIG_PROTECT="/etc /usr/share/X11/xkb /var/bind" CONFIG_PROTECT_MASK="/etc/env.d /etc/env.d/java/ /etc/gconf /etc/java-config/vms/ /etc/revdep-rebuild /etc/terminfo" CXXFLAGS="-O3 -march=pentium3 -fomit-frame-pointer -pipe" DISTDIR="/usr/portage/distfiles" FEATURES="autoconfig ccache distlocks metadata-transfer sandbox sfperms strict" GENTOO_MIRRORS="ftp://linux.rz.ruhr-uni-bochum.de/gentoo-mirror/ " LINGUAS="" MAKEOPTS="-j2" PKGDIR="/usr/portage/packages" PORTAGE_RSYNC_OPTS="--recursive --links --safe-links --perms --times --compress --force --whole-file --delete --delete-after --stats --timeout=180 --exclude='/distfiles' --exclude='/local' --exclude='/packages'" PORTAGE_TMPDIR="/var/tmp" PORTDIR="/usr/portage" SYNC="rsync://rsync.europe.gentoo.org/gentoo-portage" USE="x86 apache2 berkdb bitmap-fonts cli cracklib crypt cups dlloader dri elibc_glibc fortran gdbm gpm input_devices_evdev input_devices_keyboard input_devices_mouse isdnlog kernel_linux libg++ mmx ncurses nls nptl nptlonly pam pcre perl ppds pppd python readline reflection session spl sse ssl tcpd truetype-fonts type1-fonts udev unicode userland_GNU video_cards_s3 xorg zlib" Unset: CTARGET, EMERGE_DEFAULT_OPTS, INSTALL_MASK, LANG, LC_ALL, LDFLAGS, PORTAGE_RSYNC_EXTRA_OPTS, PORTDIR_OVERLAY

USE=cgi emerge sys-power/nut then attach the output from 'equery f sys-power/nut'
Created attachment 101909 [details] equery f sys-power/nut
hmm, that's really weird. can you please set: PORT_LOGDIR=/var/log/portage in your make.conf emerge sys-power/nut again and then attach the log from /var/log/portage to this bug?
What I can tell for sure is that the CGI files are missing in the tarball ...

So why doesn't anybody replace the broken tarball with a new one?
your system is broken, and the build doesn't fail properly: i686-pc-linux-gnu-gcc -I../include -O3 -march=pentium3 -fomit-frame-pointer -pipe -Wall -Wsign-compare -I/usr/include -o upsimage.cgi upsimage.c libupsclient.a cgilib.o -lz -lm -lgd ../common/common.o -lssl -lcrypto /var/tmp/portage/nut-2.0.4-r1/temp/cckPT2Ya.o: In function `drawimage': upsimage.c:(.text+0x2b): undefined reference to `gdImagePng' collect2: ld returned 1 exit status distcc[13861] ERROR: compile upsimage.c on localhost failed make[1]: *** [upsimage.cgi] Error 1 The 2.0.5 build from upstream should catch failures like these, so I'm considering this to be fixed now.
