Description Joi 2006-07-06 02:48:51 UTC
problem: after a stage3-installing on a x86 system with vanilla-sources kernel I want to update the basis-system, when all the time an error stop emerge --update world at gcc and glibc installing, now all other packages are installed, only gcc-3.4.6 and glibc have these problems. The next few lines are the output on my display, the saved infos written in a file by emerge -v --update world and my emerge --info. Please tell me what can I do?

These are the infos plotted on my display
ERROR: Segmentation fault
The bug is not reproducible, so it is likely a hardware or OS problem

well the error message is usually correct:
The bug is not reproducible, so it is likely a hardware or OS problem

does the emerge fail at the same exact place each time ?
Comment 3 Joi 2006-07-06 13:27:35 UTC
I don't think so, because i have run emerge --update world a few times and i have written the Error message to a paper and it's not always the same message but my problems are always at gcc and glibc. The rest of the packages by emerge --update world i could run without so big troubles because it stopped two times by two different other packages, then i run it again and the problem was solved, but not at gcc and glibc, when i start it again the problem is still there but with any other message, only the "The bug is not reproducible, so it is likely a hardware or OS problem" is all the time the same.
I thank you for any ideas, what can i do that I can see where the exact problem is? Is there a possibility that when I wait until gcc-4.1 is stable that the problem is fixed?
Thank you for helping me!

your best bet at this point in time is probably to read Bug 20600
Comment 5 Joi 2006-07-06 15:44:17 UTC
Thank you for this tip, on www.gentooforum.de i have written nearly the same problem because last time, two weeks ago no one could help me with nearly the same problem. Now the tip what i should try and the solution is to make the memtest with starting the computer by boot-cd, so i'll try it tomorrow and poste the result, otherwise i will try the other possibilities from bug 20600.
Thank you for quick help

our latest livecds include memtest on them, so you could just use one of those
