Description George Shapovalov (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2006-07-04 13:06:01 UTC
Pinging on irc is futile it seems, and then I thought, why don't I use the "standard" means? :)

Anyway, Scientific Gentoo project is undergoing a reorg, as you may have seen mentioned on -dev list, part of which is becoming a TLP, so we need our web page moved accordingly one level up, so that gentoo/xml/htdocs/proj/en/desktop/science/ would become gentoo/xml/htdocs/proj/en/science/ .
It would be nice to keep the cvs history, so I was told to contact infra and ask cvs admins to perform a server-side move. Can somebody help me with this please? Or route the bug accordingly if I did not assign it to the right alias?
Thanks!

George

Yeah we need a repocopy, not a mv, so it doesn't screw up the old location.
Comment 2 Robin Johnson archtester Gentoo Infrastructure gentoo-dev Security 2006-07-04 13:13:07 UTC
Would this be sufficent?
cp -r gentoo/xml/htdocs/proj/en/desktop/science gentoo/xml/htdocs/proj/en/science

mv will not be used, since it would screw up already checked out copies.

Fine with me, as long as it does not break anything and we have commit access to the final (new) location..

And sorry, yea, mv was not a good idea :).

On a second thought: keeping stale stuff around forever does not seem optimal either. What about the following:
after we are "done" with a workable version of a new site we replace the contents at the old place with something along the lines:
"Scientific Gentoo has become a top level project and its webpage have moved <a=here>.."
Then, some month down the line, perheaps even (half?) a year we remove old page (we do remove stuff in the portage tree after all)? Or completely removing it is a no no?

Sounds good.

Just do 'cvs rm' then, deleting it in the repository causes the same issue as moving it.

Do you really think you'll be using the old history much? If not, maybe just selectively copy the pages you want for the new location.
Comment 7 George Shapovalov (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2006-07-05 12:32:01 UTC
Well, I wouldn't say there even is much to preserve (in terms of history). That page saw like total of 5 commits (the index.xml file), few other files that are there probably even less. I am personally Ok with starting anew, however some people requested that history be preserved. Plus there is not that much to copy/move either.

Donnie: I think I'll leave it to you (as you were the one requesting history to be preserved) and Robin to decide whether it is worth the hassle. I'd just like to know the outcome, so that I can start adjusting it..

Ok, no action or responce in a long time, and some herds are even finalized by now (but about half of them still need a push :)).

I took upon it finally and copied contents over from old location (under desktop/) to the new location. In doing so I "lost" the hpc_annonce.xml, as its xml did not check out and that thing never really picked up. If there is any interest in it still, please, whoever wants it - fix the xml and then you can add it back. I will not delete it from under desktop/science/ for a while (while its index.xml will be there with the relocation notice).

Closing the bug.

hpc_annonce.xml is now a valid xml file.
