before anything happens you need to do your quizzes and johnm needs to approve them. http://www.gentoo.org/proj/en/devrel/recruiters/mentor.xml is a good guide to get you started.
Comment 2 Mike Auty (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2006-03-05 23:29:12 UTC
Thanks, johnm's already pointed me in the direction of a lot of reading material and the quizes. I'll try and get through them as soon as I can... 5:)
Comment 3 Jochen Maes (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2006-04-10 07:33:32 UTC
Hey,

please send your quiz to recruiters and ping me on irc...

i'll be your recruiter of the day :-)

Hi, sorry, I thought I'd sent my quiz answers to recruiters@gentoo last tuesday? I can resend it if it didn't get through? Also will it be a problem that ikelos appears to be registered on irc? I've registered mauty on irc, but I don't intend to use it much, if at all. I may also ask to see if ikelos is an old name and get it expired if it turns out I really will need IRC access...

Thanks Jochen! 5:)
Comment 5 Jochen Maes (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2006-04-11 00:00:40 UTC
hey,

i've asked the ikelos nick to be dropped, so it's yours, please register quickely :-)
i'll find your quiz in the list then thanks.
you will need irc regulary as this is our main communication between developers.
Ping me on irc btw for our little chat
Comment 6 Mike Auty (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2006-04-11 03:54:00 UTC
Thanks very much Jochen, I've registered ikelos and _ikelos now... 5:)

I'll try and get sometime on IRC as soon as possible...
Comment 7 Jochen Maes (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2006-04-14 11:14:43 UTC
well done on the first quiz... you got me stunned for the first time!

johnm please direct him for his end-quiz, approve and let him send it in and ping me.

you have 2 weeks max :-)
(shame to loose this kind of expertise :-) )

Mike has full cvs access, his email address et al and is just waiting for an official announcement from me. Jochen, I can close this off once I send the mail out if that suits you? :)

John,

you can close this bug as fixed the minute you send his welcome mail to gentoo-dev@lists.gentoo.org (and cc to plate@gentoo.org)

Comment 13 Mike Auty (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2016-05-22 20:08:59 UTC
Sorry, how did I become inactive? Which outstanding bugs, or packages I maintain are in need of support that I'm not providing?
Comment 14 Pacho Ramos gentoo-dev 2016-05-22 21:03:14 UTC
This was due to a bug in the script warning about the commit dates, sorry for the noise

No problem, you just had me quite worried for a moment there! 5:S

I find it a little disconnected from reality that despite responding directly to a thread by one of the undertakers team, specifically concerning being marked inactive purely due to main repository commits, I've now been marked as inactive purely due to main repository commits. This highlights that the current metrics used for determining activity are poor indicators for actual activity.

Please:
* return this ticket to its previous state
* identify additional metrics (such as ML posts/dev repo commits) to determine activity
* implement the idea of a commit bit for ::gentoo as suggested by Alec Warner
Comment 18 Michał Górny archtester Gentoo Infrastructure gentoo-dev Security 2019-09-13 04:54:10 UTC
Are you requesting that we disable your commit bit now, or purely theoretically?
Comment 19 Mike Auty (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2019-09-13 08:22:09 UTC
Purely theoretical, since I would only want it implemented if the activity metrics were improved first. I don't want my packages reassigned, or to be retired and I am responsive, which hopefully is enough to have this ticket resolved again.

We don't reassign the packages if developer replies. We will also be more lenient on delaying the retirement. However, don't confuse that for a free ticket to do nothing.

Neither ml posts nor private repo commits qualify as developer activity. Anyone can post to the ml or maintain his repository. And neither really helps the majority of Gentoo users. Now, if someone did outstanding job, say, helping users, that would be different. Burden of proof is on you.

Also please update gentooRoles to indicate where we should look for your activity. Don't expect Undertakers to go stalking you.

Please don't reassign any of my packages. I found time to start fixing my bugs, as can be seen at: https://gitweb.gentoo.org/repo/gentoo.git/commit/?id=2083f13d46be3c03cee8d5e355ede7bd1a75cfe3

I'm not fast, but I also don't have that many outstanding bugs.

Comment 25 Mike Auty (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2021-07-27 10:57:27 UTC
Thanks for the email, I've really lost motivation in the project. It used to be fun, dynamic and have the latest collection of software no matter how obscure. It taught me a lot about Linux, mostly through fixing breakages and improving ebuilds. I understand the philosophy for wanting quality over diversity, but I think it greatly misses the point of Gentoo, in my eyes at least. I'll move my overlay I hope it proves to be the right direction for the distribution and I wish it luck in its future.

For anyone that's interested, my overlay will now live at https://github.com/ikelos/gentoo-overlay.

Feel free to retire me, and let me know if there's anything you need me to do to finish up...

Hey,

thanks for your honesty. We'll give you the customary 14 days to reconsider before proceeding. Glad to hear your time spent with the distribution hasn't been all in vain. If you ever find the passion again, it's easier to return as an old developer. Just contact recruiters, let them know what you'd be working on, how much time you have to contribute, and recruiters will schedule a short interview making sure you're up to date with latest standards. (So no need to go through the full recruitment again)

Regarding your overlay, I'll have to check if we have an automated way of updating repositories.xml file in https://gitweb.gentoo.org/data/api.git/tree/files/overlays - but no need to worry about it now, it's under our radar now as you mentioned it.
Comment 27 Mike Auty (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2021-08-01 00:57:15 UTC
Oh, one thing I did want to check. Can I change the email address of my bugzilla account, or should I just sign up for a new one with a different email address? I guess the history will still be there either way, just not sure what the procedure is...

Hey,

this current account gets locked after retirement, so you'll need to register a new bugzilla account. But you can use the same e-mail you used with your previous account, before it got upgraded into *@gentoo.org.

It's still there, by the way, and is pointing to now deleted repo.
If you could switch it to https://github.com/ikelos/gentoo-overlay.git, that'd be great.

Heh, I actually wrote a script that checks it, but forgot to run it *facepalm*

There's one problem though, the e-mail address you gave isn't registered to our bugzilla. And the last commit to the overlay is done with @gentoo.org address. And the point to record the e-mail is to address bugs. So we need a working e-mail address that's registered to our bugzilla.

But just so you know, the @gentoo.org e-mail address will still work for X amount of months after retirement based on years of activity. So in ikelos's case, he'll get the maximum of 6 months.

I'll update the repo URL but I can't do much with the author's e-mail. Thanks!

Thank you for fixing the URL quickly!
It was important for me to get layman syncing to work again without a local xml override.

Ah, I see.

Mike, is it something you could do, register to the bugzilla with the @gmail address?

I hate mishitting enter, sorry for the spam... 5:S

As I was saying, I did eventually register my email address for bugzilla but hadn't seen this I'm afraid. I'm quite happy to be delisted from the layman repository, I'm not sure the repo has much of interest to others, and I'm now much more relaxed not to be receiving emails telling me I've forgotten to update everything when gentoo changes python out from under me... 5;)

If you would like to keep it in layman, we can do that for a while, and we'll see how much effort I can put into looking after it. Hope that's ok...
