The wxGTK ebuilds support building only wxbase, i.e. the non-GUI portions of wxGTK. However, this can't be done if you also want unicode support, since the ebuild requires the gtk2 USE flag for this. This is only a limitation in the ebuild (I tested it), and should be removed. The gtk1 version of wxGTK doesn't support unicode, to be sure, so the check should be changed to disallow it only when a gtk1 version is requested. I have attached a patch for 2.6.1-r1.

No - gtk2 use flag is deprecated (Bug 106560) and there's been enough messing with the weirdo use flag combos/meanings/blocks in wxGTK ebuilds/eclasses. wxGTK-2.6.2-r1 is being stabilized (Bug 120333), gtk1 support dropped and there will hopefully be a bit of sanity restored in wx* land.

wxGTK-2.6.2-r1 is stable on all arches beside arm, and as comment #2 states, does not have the problem anymore due to no support for gtk1. Is this bug report still relevant?
Seems like it is fixed to me. Reopen if I'm mistaken.
