Description Marijn Schouten (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2006-01-26 06:32:09 UTC
after upgrading to ati-drivers-8.21.7 yesterday, I didn't get a graphical login screen anymore. My screen went black. I was able to go to a virtual text console, by (ab)using my keyboard. I downgraded to ati-drivers-8.18.8-r2 and everything works again. Before I had ati-drivers-8.20.8 and they worked fine too. My graphics card is an "ATI Technologies Inc RS482 [Radeon Xpress 200]" integrated on my MSI RS482M4 motherboard.

Portage 2.1_pre3-r1 (default-linux/amd64/2005.1, gcc-3.4.5-vanilla, glibc-2.3.6-r2, 2.6.14-gentoo-r5 x86_64)

Comment 1 Remy Blank 2006-01-30 12:52:29 UTC
I had the same symptoms with 8.21.7 on gentoo-sources-2.6.15-r1, but only after a logout or a switch to the console. The card is a Mobility Radeon 9600 on a Dell Inspiron 8600.

Downgrading to 8.20.8 fixed the problem (so far).

BTW, ati-drivers-extra-8.20-8 doesn't compile anymore, due to using ${A} for unpacking (it now contains two files instead of just the binary from ATI).
Comment 2 Marijn Schouten (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2006-02-14 02:44:51 UTC
I get the same behaviour for ati-drivers-8.22.5, except that when I pressed a key when the screen was black, I got a kernel panic. I've downgraded to ati-drivers-8.20.8 to fix things.

Comment 3 Marijn Schouten (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2006-05-26 11:00:52 UTC
Ati-drivers-8.25.18 once again fails to give me a graphical login. All I get is a black screen. Machine appeared to be unresponsive.

This involves an old version of ati-drivers and is most likely an upstream issue if it is still there at all. You will probably have better luck filing this in the unofficial bugzilla at http://ati.cchtml.com/, unless you have reason to believe this can be fixed in the ebuild. In that case please reopen.
