When I try to update world I get stuck at gnome-vfs-2.10.1r1 as it gives a gcc 
error:

gcc-config error: Could not run/locate "i386-pc-linux-gnu-gcc"
Error: Empty file

What kind of output do you get from gcc-config -l ?

I ran into this problem when doing an emerge -uDNv world after installing a
stage3 + gnome from the GRP.  The solution that I found is to re-emerge libIDL

correction, just reread the error message, it's a different problem
