Description Mike Auty (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2004-09-03 03:22:44 UTC
With xorg-x11 6.7.0, when using xrandr to change the resolution, the resolution would change, but the monitor would also change modes and the image would still fill the screen.

With xorg-x11 6.7.99.903, I found that the mode it started in 1600x1200 filled the screen, but that changing resolution meant the picture merely filled a portion of the top left of the screen. I also noticed that xrandr no longer detected screen refresh rates that had previously been detected for the same system (all refresh rates were forces at 75Hz).

Reproducible: Always
Steps to Reproduce:
1. Start up X windows, autoconfig sets the resolution at 1600x1200
2. Use xrandr (or screen resolution under gnome) and change the resolution to 800x600.
3. Squint.

Actual Results:
The image of the desktop filled the top left quarter of the screen and was still
difficult to read.

Expected Results:
The monitor should have clicked into another mode and the image of the desktop
should have filled the entire screen.

Yep, exact same problem with release 6.8.0. I usually have 1280x1024 set, which it honors, except only using the upper left portion of the screen. Makes me feel like I have a 17" monitor :( Also, I have a Radeon 7200 as well, using ck-sources kernel. Checked emerge info, looks about the same, will post if requested. Stumped on this one.
Comment 2 Mike Auty (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2004-09-09 17:21:18 UTC
It looks like we want to be focusing on this bug report:

http://freedesktop.org/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=1175

But it doesn't seem to have been picked up by anyone (it's still assigned to xorg-bugzilla-noise). Some redhat people have also been experiencing it, all with the 7200 chipset and the very latest kernel (2.6.8-1.524 or something). Their report is at:

http://www.redhat.com/archives/fedora-test-list/2004-August/msg00514.html

I dunno if the x11 people at gentoo can help push the profile of this bug, but it's definitely gonna stop me from upgrading until it's fixed...
Comment 3 Donnie Berkholz (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2004-10-07 16:27:27 UTC
We'll just follow this one upstream.
Comment 4 tegoon 2004-11-14 06:57:24 UTC
This bug seems to be fixed in the latest release of Xorg. And a patch to fix this bug can be found here :

It's already in 6.8.0-r4.
Comment 7 tegoon 2004-11-22 11:47:20 UTC
Sorry, I didn't know it.
I haven't read the Changelog correctly. Sorry.
But thank you for having fixed this bug.
