grass is a very nice open source 3D graphics Library for Linux

http://public.kitware.com/VTK/

It should be in Portage.

Sorry, I haven't. Since im studying physics now, had only the time to report bugs).
But a Plot Programm (which I use and is in Portage) , LabPlot, see http://bugs.gentoo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=28216 needs vtk in future versions.
