The looping occurs in the step env FEATURES="-collision-protect" emerge --oneshot sys-apps/portage which pulls in many dependencies, one of them being elfutils. The looping process is 'cc1'. By inserting clauses in etc/portage/package.mask I tried if any of the available versions of elfutils might be possible to emerge, but no luck. Below it can be seen that I used `MAKEOPTS=-j5', but it does not help to undo this. Probably the 'cc1' execution is not parallelized anyway. The host OS is OpenSUSE 11.4 on a quad-core AMD64 machine.
