Description Bernd Pachur 2009-03-16 12:30:55 UTC
The build of elfutils-0.140 hangs in my machine.

the last lines of the output are:

./../libdw/libdw.h:649: warning: C99 inline functions are not supported; using GNU89
./../libdw/libdw.h:649: warning: to disable this warning use -fgnu89-inline or the gnu_inline function attribute
./../libdw/libdw.h:656: warning: C99 inline functions are not supported; using GNU89

the build process does not crash but hangs indefinitily with this kind of warning.

i tried to disable all uses flags for the ebuild without success but only the files that produce the warning change. (the example output is with disabled use flags.)

the only solution was to change the gcc profile to x86_64-pc-linux-gnu-4.3.3.

when i switched back to x86_64-pc-linux-gnu-4.2.4 because it is my system wide gcc profile the build hangs again.

now i have the same problem on my ~x86 machine with i686-pc-linux-gnu-4.2.4.

and unlike stated previously the problem is with the same file even with enabled use flags (nls bzip2 zlib)

why not use gcc-4.3.3 instead ?

<@SpanKY>
Without intending to be snarky about it, this isn't really all that helpful, and just sort of messes with the whole signal-to-noise thingie. If you are in fact saying that elfutils is broken and gonna stay that way for <gcc-4.3.3, please clarify. Otherwise, can you shed light on the problem without requiring a gcc upgrade?
</@SpanKY>

For what it is worth, I'm experiencing an identical error to those above. If needed, I'll gladly post my emerge info. Right now, I'm late for bed and had hoped to get this update world back on its feet quickly before I sleep. If it'll help, post so, and I'll add emerge --info tomorrow.
Comment 8 SpanKY gentoo-dev 2009-03-18 06:13:42 UTC
why dont you do as i ask instead of getting snarky. gcc-4.2 is not really supported, especially considering gcc-4.3.2 is the next stable target. if it isnt going stable, we dont care.

Well, if gcc-4.3 is the next stable target, then I will gladly compile my system with that to help with the bugs. I had no idea that you're going to jump straight to 4.3 so that's why I didn't compile my system with that. Should we add a comment or something to gcc-4.2 ebuild that it won't be supported and that gcc-4.3 is the next stable target? That way other people installing 4.2 would know that they should install 4.3 instead if they want support.

So, then, you _are_ saying that elfutils-0.140 broken for <gcc-4.3.3 for good? Is there a reason we should use gcc-4.3.3, if 4.3.2 is the next stable target?

Look, I'm really not looking to start, or participate, in any kind of flaming. Once again, I didn't intend to be "snarky." I was honestly trying to suggest that more constructive assistance would be appreciated, and if we are in fact out of luck for elfutils-0.140 for <gcc-4.3.3, could you please clarify that. And with a bit of time away from the machine, with some rest, and in an ideal universe, I would have phrased it that way instead. I do wish I had.

Perhaps I was a bit abrupt. I apologize if my comment read as an attack. What I am is a user, not a developer, so naturally I come here looking for guidance from a more savvy crowd, guidance which I generally receive, and enjoy because the answers are typical encouraging, or at least to the point about what should be done. I'm also tired, as I mentioned, and frustrated, having just in the last few weeks rebuilt system and world on three 256M Latitude C600s, currently sitting at the tail end of another, and would really prefer not to emerge gcc again. I read your post as a casual suggestion that didn't really address the problem, and posted when I should have napped.

We aren't all devs, but neither are we sufficiently lowly that we deserve dismissal. I sincerely do apologize if I came off as a jerk in my post, but at the same time, "why not use..." honestly didn't seem to offer anything new to the bug. And frankly, with some of these machines, emerging gcc is a significant investment of time. If it is the case that it is a necessary thing, it would help to know that. Even better would be to understand what's going wrong, but that's more icing on the cake, and completely not necessary.

"...we don't care..." just makes it feel the slightest bit less warm and fuzzy to use Gentoo.

But, really, in a nutshell, I am sorry if I offended you.

Beginning from scratch:
Is it necessary for us to upgrade gcc to emerge 0.140 and does it need to be >=4.3.3, or is there the possibility there's just an ebuild issue, or perhaps a particular area you could suggest worth investigating to get past this bump in the road?
Comment 11 SpanKY gentoo-dev 2009-03-18 08:35:44 UTC
every gcc version other than the latest stable/unstable is "not supported" beyond easy bugs and/or patches people provide. we leave the latest "major" version in the tree as a convenience for people who need a specific series or want to do quick comparisons. there are a ton of known bugs in every version of gcc but we dont track any of them unless they affect latest stable/unstable.

the gcc-4.3.2 stable proposal was posted to -dev a while ago and there are plenty of tracker bugs open to make sure stable isnt trashed when the stable markings actually do occur.

Chris: stop putting words into my mouth. i made one specific statement. you can assume *exactly what i said* and nothing else. i have no idea if the issue is gcc-4.2.4 specific or if gcc-4.3.x will work. if you're running an unstable system, then you should be willing to do simple tests when requested, even if you arent a dev. if you want a stable system, then use stable.

if this bug is going to be useless back & forth drivel, then have fun. i'll work on something else. maybe someone else will take a look.
Comment 12 Bernd Pachur 2009-03-18 09:34:28 UTC
gcc-4.3 is not stable yet so this bug is valid, isn't it?

if elfutils-0.140 will not build with gcc-4.2* and this can't be fixed at least the ebuild should be fixed to mirror this.
whatever the reason is neither gcc-4.2* nor gcc-4.3* are marked stable at the moment.

so if you won't or can't fix this bug the ebuild should be changed accordingly. probably by changing the depends to block gcc-4.2*.

OK. Much sleep. Hopefully, I'll be coming off as somewhat more civil. Again, I do apologize for coming off confrontational, and I did not intend to put words in your mouth. Actually, I'm not sure to which words you refer, but I accept that something I said came across that way, and offer apologies for that impression, as well. If it was:

>So, then, you _are_ saying that elfutils-0.140 broken for <gcc-4.3.3 for good?
>Is there a reason we should use gcc-4.3.3, if 4.3.2 is the next stable target?

Then I was intending to ask for clarification, as you specifically asked about 4.3.3, not meaning to _state_ that this was your meaning, but I see how it could be read as stating that you had said this. Again, sorry for the implication.

I am more than happy to do simple tests, in fact I'm eager and willing to do whatever tests might be suggested. I would, for the moment, however, prefer to avoid building a new gcc, at least until the weekend, when I'll have more time to focus and less direct need for using this machine for a while, as on older hardware at least, that is a bit more than a simple test. First off, I'd prefer to try anything you might suggest to identify what's actually going on with this hang, with elfutils-0.140 and gcc-4.2.4-r1.

I fully understand that I'm running unstable, and, while I'm not a gentoo dev, that doesn't mean that I don't have development experience or more particularly a willingness to apply what skills I do have to investigating bugs. All I meant by the (user, !dev) statement was that I'm coming to bugzilla as a user of gentoo looking for help from gentoo devs.

Do you have any suggestions for how to proceed from here? What logs can I look to when a compile simply seems to hang up without dying or presenting? What tools can I use to try to get a better idea of what's going on?

Would it be useful for me to post my emerge --info in addition to the others posted here? Likewise any logs? I didn't do so with the thinking that I would avoid adding clutter if it wasn't necessary.

I've left it going for somewhere around 4 hours, at this point sitting on "open.c". Earlier, but without my making any changes that I remember it hung on bzip2, and on other occasions on gzip. Is there a reason any of these files might take hours and hours to compile? top shows that it is doing something, with cpu usage fluctuating in the 80-90% percentage range, and the amount of RAM used by the process also fluctuating. _Something_ appears to be happening, but I'm at a loss for figuring out what.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Also, I recognize that my posts haven't won me any friendship points with you, but I am hoping at least I haven't created any lasting antagonism between us.

Confirmed, also in elfutils-0.141.
Comment 19 Mark Loeser (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2009-05-03 18:16:40 UTC
I am unable to reproduce this with the latest stable gcc or anything newer. If you can, please reopen with the build log, preprocessed source attached, and emerge --info.

Had elfutils-0.140 blocked because of this and .143 popped in portage. Still hangs. Looks to be something with libdwfl/link_map.c. I CTRL-C at the hang (which shows bzip2 for me) and tried to do a make in the libdwfl dir and it won't compile link_map.c

Comment 22 Ryan Hill (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2009-10-05 23:12:02 UTC
as mentioned, gcc 4.2 was an awful release. you should really give 4.3 a go, it's much more stable.
Comment 23 Robert Davis 2009-10-06 14:08:47 UTC
Oops. My bad. Saw gcc-4.4.1 being updated and assumed was on it. Forgot about gcc slots. 4.4.1 worked. Now to clean up all these gccs.
Comment 24 Jeroen Roovers (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2010-06-02 19:22:17 UTC
You cannot call it FIXED before all arches have something greater than gcc-4.2 stabilised. HPPA is lagging there.
Comment 25 Ryan Hill (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2010-06-03 00:45:51 UTC
true, but this isn't going to be fixed. how would you like to proceed?

hppa@ is now looking into stabilising sys-devel/gcc-4.4.4-r1.
Comment 27 Jeroen Roovers (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2010-08-10 02:38:54 UTC
4.4.4-r1 is stable for HPPA.

Yes, upgrade gcc profile to 4.3.x solved problem. You saved my time. Thanks!
