Comment 1 Samuli Suominen (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2010-07-21 21:40:44 UTC
The problem is:

/usr/bin/perl: symbol lookup error:
/usr/lib64/perl5/vendor_perl/5.12.1/x86_64-linux/auto/Cwd/Cwd.so: undefined
symbol: Perl_pad_sv

That's likely unfinished/broken perl upgrade... Perhaps perl recompile, followed by `perl-cleaner --reallyall` would help.
Comment 2 Kent Fredric (IRC: kent\n) (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2010-07-22 01:09:09 UTC
Please post the contents of emerge --info , ( or whatever equivalent you have )
preferably with

   emerge --info dev-lang/perl

Importantly, showing your CFLAGS/LDFLAGS in use.

hi,
i am the one that has to say please, not you :)

anyway i think i destroyed my system too much

the "perl-cleaner --reallyall" didnt help as well as emerge perl and perl cleaner afterwards. the perl-cleaner --reallyall failed....

i had my system with accept_keywords="~amd64" then i downgraded back to amd64("stable") except for a few packages like perl kde etc...
it went kind of well till i did another emerge --sync && emerge -uvND world
i dont know which packages were upgraded since i did that a few days ago. :(

i think the 'bug' is more likely to be found between my monitor and my chair next to the monitor :)

greetings

Hey, some of us have to be nice =).
After all, having somebody file a bug report is helpful =).

I note, that your Cwd.so is comming from the contents of perl-core/File-Spec instead of the Cwd.so in perl itself.

> qlist dev-lang/perl | grep Cwd
/usr/lib64/perl5/5.12.1/x86_64-linux-thread-multi/Cwd.pm
/usr/lib64/perl5/5.12.1/x86_64-linux-thread-multi/auto/Cwd/Cwd.so

> qlist perl-core/File-Spec | grep Cwd
/usr/lib64/perl5/vendor_perl/5.12.1/x86_64-linux-thread-multi/auto/Cwd/Cwd.so
/usr/lib64/perl5/vendor_perl/5.12.1/x86_64-linux-thread-multi/Cwd.pm
/usr/lib64/debug/usr/lib64/perl5/vendor_perl/5.12.1/x86_64-linux-thread-multi/auto/Cwd/Cwd.so.debug

As such, for my amusement, could you try removing perl-core/File-Spec and see how things go without it, ie:

run:
    perl -MCwd -e 'print cwd;'

before and after unmerging that and see what transpires.

thank you very much, i can compile again :)

qlist dev-lang/perl | grep Cwd
/usr/lib64/perl5/5.12.1/x86_64-linux/auto/Cwd/Cwd.so
/usr/lib64/perl5/5.12.1/x86_64-linux/Cwd.pm

# qlist perl-core/File-Spec | grep Cwd
/usr/lib64/perl5/vendor_perl/5.12.1/x86_64-linux/Cwd.pm
/usr/lib64/perl5/vendor_perl/5.12.1/x86_64-linux/auto/Cwd/Cwd.so

this command did the same thing. note that the the next line was right after the printed path.(no CR / LF)
like this
# perl -MCwd -e 'print cwd;'
/home/myuseraccountMYcomputerNAME folder#

If you now manually reinstall File-Spec, does the problem still occur?

( I have File-Spec installed also, so it should work, but if the problem comes back then we have a place to start looking )
Comment 7 Torsten Veller (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2010-07-22 05:52:13 UTC
I guess you removed "*-g*" from your CFLAGS recently.
If perl's Configure sees a '*-g*' in $optimize it defines -DDEBUGGING.

We have to fix this.

We can do:
if
use debug => set -DDEBUGGING and myarch="${myarch}-debug"
else
  *-g* in CFLAGS => set -DDEBUGGING=-g
else
  set -DDEBUGGING=none

Checking for *-g* is so imprecise or we are misusing $optimize for CFLAGS:
*-g*) set `echo "X $optimize " | sed 's/ -g / /'`

Fedora just always includes these symbols, with or without debugging, here:

http://cvs.fedoraproject.org/viewvc/rpms/perl/devel/perl-add-symbols.patch?revision=1.1&view=markup

..until they removed it again...
http://cvs.fedoraproject.org/viewvc/rpms/perl/devel/perl.spec?r1=1.270&r2=1.271

That was a packaging mistake in fedora's perl. They built former releases with -DDEBUGGING. Now they add -DDEBUGGING=-g.

i reinstalled File-spec and ran emerge vlc. (revdep-rebuild and reboot[just to be sure..] before that) and it emerged just fine :)

I am hitting the same message for XML-Parser on several machines. For some reason, I have libperl-5.10.1 while perl is 5.12.1 installed. I can unmerge libperl afterwards fine to restore /usr/bin/perl but some package forces the downgrade to libperl-5.10.1 back and that happens&breaks perl during "revdep-rebuild --all"

libperl-5.10.1 does not install anything. So would libperl-5.12.1

I don't see any breakage in your quote.

OK, that helped, thanks.

No, I really mean that I have different version of libperl versus perl. But taking into account libperl is empty, virtual package, I don't know if that matters to something.

One of the packages forces downgrade to libperl-5.10.1 while perl-5.12.1 and libperl-5.12.1 is installed. One needs to run perl-cleaner and due to teh File-Spec issue it always exited. That is fixed now for me, thanks.

The issue is popping up again here for me with emerge trying to recompile XML-Parser (through revdep-rebuild or perl-cleaner).

What do you think about this?:

# perl-cleaner --reallyall

 * Beginning a clean up of .ph files
 * Excluding files for 0.0.0 and 0.0.0/x86_64-linux from cleaning

 * Locating ph files for removal

 * Updating ph files

Can't open sys/_types.h: No such file or directory

Why two versions of Test-Harness-3.17 and 3.21? Is that the reason why perl-5.10.1 is to be installed and is constantly causing me troubles?

This bug is about:

/usr/lib64/perl5/vendor_perl/5.12.1/x86_64-linux/auto/Cwd/Cwd.so: undefined symbol: Perl_pad_sv

Don't hesitate to open a new bug, if that's not your problem right now.

I wonder why there is no virtual/perl-Test-Harness:0 in the list. Add it to the list and run emerge manually again.

In my experience, manually masking Perl versions lower than the one you want cause the "downgrade" issue to vanish.
