Hi, the same situation here. We have to wait for ATI to release new version of their fglrx driver.
(In reply to comment #1) > Hi, > the same situation here. > We have to wait for ATI to release new version of their fglrx driver. > i found a solution at german gentoo forum but you have to use the offical ati-driver from ati.com: download ati-driver-9.2-x86.x86_64.run from ati hompage download patch: http://liquorix.net/patches/FGLRX-2.6.29-9.2-5.diff copy patch and ati driver in a folder and change to folder extract ati driver: ./ati-driver-installer-9.2-x86.x86_64.run --extract a Patch ati driver: patch -p0 < FGLRX-2.6.29-9.2-5.diff Move patched ati driver: mv a fglrx-2.9_patched change to folder: cd fglrx-2.9_patched Install patched ati-driver: ./ati-installer.sh . --install Well evening Thanks to Zappel
Created attachment 187275 [details] ati-drivers-8.593.ebuild with kernel 2.6.29 patch I made myself a ebuild, here it is if anyone want's to use it. It's newer version ati-drivers but patch works there also. Also don't enable Processor type and features ---> x86 PAT support, I get there only black screen.
any news on the issue? when it will be resolved?
would be nice to see this in the tree ..
I'm using the ebuild from http://bugs.gentoo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=264011 works but my dmesg is full with this: [fglrx:firegl_find_any_map] *ERROR* Invalid map handle!<3>[fglrx:drm_vm_open] *ERROR* map not found -> inconsistent kernel data!!! vma_start:0x7f7f10ca2000,handle:0xf6df0000 [fglrx:firegl_find_any_map] *ERROR* Invalid map handle!<3>[fglrx:drm_vm_open] *ERROR* map not found -> inconsistent kernel data!!! vma_start:0x7f3ffd8ac000,handle:0xe0000000 [fglrx:firegl_find_any_map] *ERROR* Invalid map handle!<3>[fglrx:drm_vm_open] *ERROR* map not found -> inconsistent kernel data!!! vma_start:0x7f400e208000,handle:0xf6df0000 [fglrx:firegl_find_any_map] *ERROR* Invalid map handle!<3>[fglrx:drm_vm_open] *ERROR* map not found -> inconsistent kernel data!!! vma_start:0x7f400ffae000,handle:0xf6df0000 [fglrx:firegl_find_any_map] *ERROR* Invalid map handle!<3>[fglrx:drm_vm_open] *ERROR* map not found -> inconsistent kernel data!!! vma_start:0x7f400ffbe000,handle:0xe10bc000 [fglrx:firegl_find_any_map] *ERROR* Invalid map handle!<3>[fglrx:drm_vm_open] *ERROR* map not found -> inconsistent kernel data!!! vma_start:0x7f4010a5c000,handle:0xe0000000 [fglrx:firegl_find_any_map] *ERROR* Invalid map handle!<3>[fglrx:drm_vm_open] *ERROR* map not found -> inconsistent kernel data!!! vma_start:0x7f40169fc000,handle:0xe11c1000 [fglrx:firegl_find_any_map] *ERROR* Invalid map handle!<3>[fglrx:drm_vm_open] *ERROR* map not found -> inconsistent kernel data!!! vma_start:0x7f40169fd000,handle:0xe11c0000 [fglrx:firegl_find_any_map] *ERROR* Invalid map handle!<3>[fglrx:drm_vm_open] *ERROR* map not found -> inconsistent kernel data!!! vma_start:0x7f40169fe000,handle:0xe11bc000 [fglrx:firegl_find_any_map] *ERROR* Invalid map handle!<3>[fglrx:drm_vm_close] *ERROR* map not found -> inconsistent kernel data!!! vma_start:0x7f3ffd8ac000,handle:0xe0000000 [fglrx:firegl_find_any_map] *ERROR* Invalid map handle!<3>[fglrx:drm_vm_close] *ERROR* map not found -> inconsistent kernel data!!! vma_start:0x7f400e208000,handle:0xf6df0000 [fglrx:firegl_find_any_map] *ERROR* Invalid map handle!<3>[fglrx:drm_vm_close] *ERROR* map not found -> inconsistent kernel data!!! vma_start:0x7f400ffae000,handle:0xf6df0000 [fglrx:firegl_find_any_map] *ERROR* Invalid map handle!<3>[fglrx:drm_vm_close] *ERROR* map not found -> inconsistent kernel data!!! vma_start:0x7f400ffbe000,handle:0xe10bc000 [fglrx:firegl_find_any_map] *ERROR* Invalid map handle!<3>[fglrx:drm_vm_close] *ERROR* map not found -> inconsistent kernel data!!! vma_start:0x7f4010a5c000,handle:0xe0000000 [fglrx:firegl_find_any_map] *ERROR* Invalid map handle!<3>[fglrx:drm_vm_close] *ERROR* map not found -> inconsistent kernel data!!! vma_start:0x7f40169fc000,handle:0xe11c1000 [fglrx:firegl_find_any_map] *ERROR* Invalid map handle!<3>[fglrx:drm_vm_close] *ERROR* map not found -> inconsistent kernel data!!! vma_start:0x7f40169fd000,handle:0xe11c0000 [fglrx:firegl_find_any_map] *ERROR* Invalid map handle!<3>[fglrx:drm_vm_close] *ERROR* map not found -> inconsistent kernel data!!! vma_start:0x7f40169fe000,handle:0xe11bc000 [fglrx:firegl_find_any_map] *ERROR* Invalid map handle!<3>[fglrx:drm_vm_open] *ERROR* map not found -> inconsistent kernel data!!! vma_start:0x7f7f10ca2000,handle:0xf6df0000 [fglrx:firegl_find_any_map] *ERROR* Invalid map handle!<3>[fglrx:drm_vm_close] *ERROR* map not found -> inconsistent kernel data!!! vma_start:0x7f7f10ca2000,handle:0xf6df0000 if someone uses the build from here, do you have similar errors?
I get the same errors as above with 8.593. I'm going to add the patch for 8.582 which is working better for me.

just wanted to note that the patched ebuild worked great for me- 8.593, x86 arch. let me know if you want any more info

Now i have tried the posted ebuild ati-driver.tar.gz from Andres Kahk. First i uninstalled my other ati-drivers-9.593 version then tried to install the ebuild from Andres Kahk in at first during build of glxgears -lGL not found -- but cleaning of libGL links havent solved the porblem eselect opengl xorg-x11 works fine. After that i installed the patched 9.2-ati-driver (from the hompage) and at least i could install the ati-driver-9.593 ebuild from Andres Kahk. Wow Yes it works but i have the same errors as before at dmesg [fglrx:firegl_find_any_map] *ERROR* Invalid map handle!<3>[fglrx:drm_vm_open] *ERROR* map not found -> inconsistent kernel data!!! vma_start:0xb53c0000,handle:0xd1140000 well evening
Is this driver supposed to work on amd64 systems? I'm having problems loading the kernel module. I get this error: # modprobe fglrx FATAL: Error inserting fglrx (/lib/modules/2.6.29-gentoo-r1/video/fglrx.ko): Invalid module format
Ok. I don't know what happened before. I think some part of system state got messed up earlier. Doing some other X11-related thing, I managed to hang the system, and when I rebooted, I find that the fglrx driver loaded fine, and I was able to get X11 to start, and with some more effort, I was able to get KDE to work too! For me, it's kindof amazing that I was able to get it to work. So, next time I "emerge --sync", this is going to wipe out the driver you supplied. Of course, I can add it back, but that gets tedious. When do you think this driver (which works for me at least) will get added at least to unstable? It's got my vote!

Andres, please fix the attachment mime type (should not be text/plain). The browser tries to display it in a normal browser window.
this patch is even dirtier than the other proposed...

Same problem goes on with the new kernel. #uname -r 2.6.30-gentoo-r1 when i try to emerge x11-drivers/ati-drivers-8.593 it fails and error message says "See bug 264021" i tried to emerge ati-drivers-8.593.ebuild with kernel 2.6.29 patch but also it fails. should i open a new bug report? thanks..
I hope I'm not out of line by suggesting this, but I solved my problem by ditching ATI's broken proprietary driver and switching to the new Free driver, radeonhd. As far as I can tell, it works just as well, but I hardly use the desktop anyhow. Just a little KDE now and again. When I first installed Gentoo a few months ago, my card wasn't supported by the Free driver. Now it is. You should check to see if yours is too. You may not get as much performance out of it, but it's a small price to pay to no longer have to deal with random crashes/lockups and filesystem corruption (thankfully, I keep backups!!!).
Thanks for your suggestions. I will give radeonhd driver a try. I downgraded to stable release and reinstalled gentoo. I thought that i wont have bugs with the stable release but it is full of bugs. First of all i tried to install 8.552-r2 but i couldnt get it compile. It gaves me an error like this http://bugs.gentoo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=248910 and i can run firefox like this: dbus-launch firefox.. It complains about dbus library. So it makes me crazy.. It looks like Gentoo is dying or coming to an end :(
We shouldn't turn this into a discussion forum, but I'm currently running unstable, and I have everything working splendidly. When running unstable, one has to be patient, submitting bug reports and waiting for fixes, blocking updates manually, and other things. I'm the impatient sort and I like things to "just work." Gentoo doesn't "just work". It takes an incredible effort to install, and requires a heck of a lot of learning. But to me, it's worth it because I can get my system set up the way I want. It's not automatic, though and requires a lot of googling and asking in forums when things aren't obvious (and they usually aren't). Gentoo is being actively maintained by a lot of people. The trouble is finding those people. One great place is "http://forums.gentoo.org/". But I don't always have the patience to wait for a response, so I got an IRC client and often frequent the #gentoo and #gentoo-chat channels on irc.freenode.net. The people there are incredibly knowledgeable and helpful, and the responses come in seconds or minutes, not hours. But be prepared to have done your homework before asking a question. People have no patience for someone who didn't bother to google the error they're seeing. If you haven't spent at least 10 minutes searching, people will know and won't find you worth helping. Oh, and LISTEN to what people tell you. I don't know how many times I've seen people get answers to questions just to turn around and ask the same question 2 minutes later. Finally, to cap this off, the problems with the ATI drivers ARE ATI'S FAULT. They wrote a lousy driver, and they didn't update it to work with the latest kernels. The state Linux graphics drivers is very poor, and if you want to do something about it, go get involved with the Open Graphics Project. As for your problem with dbus, I recall having some similar problem; IIRC, I'd forgotten to start the service. That being said, I've felt your frustration before. When things don't work, it can drive you mad, especially, when you feel like you've run out of ways to diagnose the problem, google tells you nothing, and people don't respond to your forum posts. I seem to always find my answers on the IRC channel. My apologies to everyone else for the spamming.
