Take a look at line 152 in /var/tmp/portage/sci-chemistry/openbabel-2.1.1/work/openbabel-2.1.1/Makefile You'll see it's complaining that "eselect wxconfig set <profile> needs to be run. You can do something like "eselect wxwidgets set gtk2-unicode-release-2.8" and it'll work. thank you. may it be useful to add some kind of warning for dummies such me? looking at the log output, I've now found also the line: "checking wxWidgets version... not found" but it's difficult to understand if you don't know the problem. This ebuilds needs quite some fixing... - automagic dependencies on zlib, libxml2, swig, perl, python, ruby - also if don't actually want to support the wxGTK GUI, then hard-disable it, otherwise make it a use flag and inherit wxwidgets eclass, so that people won't have to mess with eselect wxwidgets in the first place. I believe I've added all dependencies needed to the new openbabel-2.2.0 ebuild. Please re-open if you feel that there are still some missing. The wxwindows problem should be fixed as well.
