Tracker for application bugs that search untrusted paths for shared libraries.

expect-5.42.1.ebuild.diff

This sed hack removes the $PORTAGE_TMPDIR out of expects RPATH which
seems to get picked up sometime durring the ./configure stage.	I have
not tested with FEATURES=test and do not know if the tests expect to use
the compiled paths. If its a problem then we should be able to just
export LIB_RUNTIME_DIR= to the emake or make check stage of the ebuild.

expect is often used for automated telnet/ssh sessions and any other
number of automated tasks.

fedora patch to remove rpath

patch attached is what fedora are using with expect
Comment 3 solar (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2005-02-19 05:24:54 UTC
Tested with ~arch. I like the patch better than the sed hack for expect.

 0x0000000f (RPATH) Library rpath: [/usr/lib:/usr/lib:/usr/X11R6/lib]

i pointed this one out to solar sometime ago, but never got around to doing anything about it:

Comment 6 SpanKY gentoo-dev 2005-05-31 21:26:27 UTC
to help prevent this stuff in the future, i've incorporated (with the help of
solar and jstubbs) a lot of ELF QA checks into current stable and cvs HEAD portage

so the next release, when paired up with pax-utils, will no longer allow
packages to be merged if they have a RPATH that points to a subdir of $BUILDDIR

Comment 8 solar (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2005-07-24 07:46:53 UTC
jaervosz reports subversion also when compiled with +perl that the perl modules
will have NULL rpaths set.

Full system scan of installed packages only can be preformed with the following
commands.

user@shell $ qlist -IC| xargs qlist | scanelf -qyrf -

# - qlist comes from portage-utils
# - scanelf comes from pax-utils

!!! ERROR: net-nds/openldap-2.2.28-r1 failed.
Comment 11 Ashu Tiwary 2005-09-12 10:59:02 UTC
(currently in the middle of re-installing my pentium-m laptop w/ 2005.1)

a couple of additional failures w/ "insecure RUNPATH's":

  media-gfx/imagemagick-6.2.4.2
  dev-db/qt-unixODBC-3.3.4
  dev-util/cmake-2.2.0

i was able to get imagemagick to install correctly by using the hack to
"/usr/lib/perl5/5.8.7/ExtUtils/MM_Unix.pm" described in the subversion bug id
105054 -> i've not yet tried qt-unixODBC or dev-util/cmake yet - as my
installation progresses i may find more and will update appropriately.

btw: should i be creating separate bugs for each pkg/component that i find that
fails?

Yes, please. You can add them as blockers to this bug if you want to relate them.

James M : if you can still reproduce it using the latest Perl, could you open a
separate bug with the corresponding error message ? Thanks in advance.

People, please... this is a *tracker* bug, not a dumpspace. File a *new* bug for affected ebuilds (search for duplicates first) and make it block Bug 81745, don't post the logs here (and especially not a bunch of duplicate logs like with subversion).
Comment 54 Radek Podgorny 2006-01-02 11:12:27 UTC
Don't have time to read all of this right now, so just posting emerge output and info in hope it helps...

Looks like net-snmp-5.2.2 also.

Comment 60 Mark Cooper 2006-01-08 10:45:54 UTC
I had the same problem, which i traced to a recent perl upgrade. I had forgot to do the associated perl module/library upgrades:

root# revdep-build
root# /usr/portage/dev-lang/perl/files/perl-cleaner all

subversion emerged fine after this.
Comment 61 William L. Thomson Jr. (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2006-01-08 13:19:34 UTC
Running the perl-cleaner all worked for me. I was able to compile net-analyzer/net-snmp where I could not before. Also seems subversion should compile and install this time as well.

workaround for pike

This is a cheap workaround to get pike 7.6.24 to install. This is not part of a correct solution. Pike seems to store the location of the files used to compile pike in the pike binaries. I masked out the offending portions with _____s. Someone clever with the pike internals will think of something better to do, but this works in the meantime.

I get insecure RUNPATH's by merging media-libs/libdvdread and emerge failed.
After that i run

env-update ; source /etc/profile

and after that media-libs/libdvdread was merged succesfull without errors.

Compiling the latest mjpegtools 1.8.0-r1 on ~ppc profile, I get RUNPATH errors during the install phase.
Comment 87 gunix 2006-02-24 08:27:21 UTC
Is there a cure for this problem?
I do
revdep-rebuild and get
for x11-libs/qt-3.3.4-r8
this problem:

>>> Test phase [not enabled]: x11-libs/qt-3.3.4-r8

>>> Install qt-3.3.4-r8 into /var/tmp/portage/qt-3.3.4-r8/image/ category x11-libs

Jakub, you are *COMPLETELY* wrong. Blaming users for bugs in "your" software doesn't bring you anything! It's the "job" of the maintainer to make sure that the software works! And quite obviously, some maintainers didn't do their homework.

Comment 97 Michael Donaghy 2006-03-06 06:21:46 UTC
Can I suggest: change the error message one gets when these things fail? At the moment it implies this is the bug for them, and there are so many comments the natural response is to stop reading after the first 10 or so and just post one's particular failed package at the bottom. Something like "See bug #81745 for discussion of the problem in general and possible workarounds; file a new bug if you wish to discuss this package specifically".
Comment 98 Thierry Carrez (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2006-03-06 09:34:03 UTC
Next version of portage will autofix these errors and clarify the message, see bug 124962

=== What fixed subversion for me ===
I know the heading of the bug says don't post but everyone seems to be ignoring it. I figured I would at least try and post something useful.

This problem seemed to be fixed for me by upgrading perl-core/ExtUtils-MakeMaker. For some reason it didn't get upgraded by emerging my world.

You can check this easily with the following:
emerge -pv perl-core/ExtUtils-MakeMaker

If you want to make sure all of your perl modules are up to date try:
perl-cleaner modules ask
(remove the 'ask' if you don't want to 'ok' each emerge)
